You read the actual reviews and you wonder what was it caused the rating - especially the WhatsOnStage review which gives no rationale for 4 stars because it has nothing negative to say about the production.

I saw the show at the press night on Tuesday and I would agree with the critics - 4 stars seems to be about right. Which is a pity really as I really wanted this to be an excellent show, being a huge fan of the OBC recording, and having previously seen a US touring production at which all I felt was missing was some stars in the leading roles. Unfortunately Rufus Hound isn't up to the part, and even Robert Lindsay isn't as excellent as I'd hoped he'd be. Also, I think the direction needs to be a bit tighter - there's far too much of the actors "knowing" they're in a stage show. Fortunately Katherine Kingsley is on top form and Lizzy Connolly almost steals the show with her "Oklahoma?" rendition. Maybe I was expecting too much. It's still definitely worth seeing, but it's not the all round Olivier winner we may have been led to believe it would be.
