Ros Povey, Zoë Simpson and Seabright Productions present Simon Callow in the Lyric Theatre Belfast production of The Man Jesus by Matthew Hurt. Directed by Joseph Alford, the upcoming UK tour runs 10th September - 4th November 2014 with a stop at the Wset End's Lyric, Shaftesbury Avenue on 6th October 2014.

The Man Jesus looks back two thousand years to witness key moments in the life of 'the man Jesus', through the eyes of the people who knew him. Thought-provoking, thrilling and full of wit, this production premiered to great acclaim at Belfast's Lyric Theatre, where it was nominated for Best New Play in The Irish Times Theatre Awards 2013. It now embarks on a strictly limited UK tour from 10th September, including the West End's Lyric Theatre on Monday 6th October.

Simon Callow performs this fresh and moving account of biblical stories including the revival of Lazarus, the wedding at Cana and the journey to Jerusalem. His powerful portrayal of the tyrants, traitors and madmen in Jesus' life asks people of all faiths and none: what sort of a man was able to inspire the history of the world?

Matthew Hurt has been on attachment at the National Theatre Studio and received three bursaries from the Peggy Ramsay Foundation. Previous plays include an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent - created with theatre O - which opened at the Traverse before transferring to the Young Vic, London; Mortal Ladies Possessed, based on the short stories of Tennessee Williams, (UK and New York, part of 59E59 Theater's 'Brits Off-Broadway' season); Believe, originally written for Linda Marlowe, (Traverse, Edinburgh), Have A Nice Life, (New York Musical Theatre Festival & Edinburgh Fringe); Tuesdays at Tesco's, an adaptation of the French play Le Mardi à Monoprix, was produced at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival where it won a Fringe First award.

Joseph Alford is Artistic Director of Theatre O. His directing work includes Delirium at the Barbican and The Abbey Theatre, Dublin; The Bridge at the Laban Centre and on tour; Arsenic and Old Lace at Derby Playhouse; Astronaut at the Barbican and international tour; The Argument at the Barbican, Mexico, Pittsburgh, Edinburgh Festival and UK tour; 3 Dark Tales at the Barbican, New York, São Paulo, Berlin and Edinburgh; Bond at BAC and Edinburgh; and What If... ? in Barcelona and Edinburgh and Matthew Hurt's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent (Edinburgh and Young Vic).

Simon Callow has become renowned for a series of one-man shows, which have toured the United Kingdom and internationally. These began with a West End production of The Importance of Being Oscar. They have included The Mystery of Charles Dickens by Peter Ackroyd, There Reigns Love, a performance of Shakespeare's sonnets, Dr Marigold & Mr Chops by Charles Dickens, Being Shakespeare by Jonathan Bate and Inside Wagner's Head. He will be performing Juvenalia at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe. On screen, Callow is best known for roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love, Room with a View and Amadeus. He has worked in television for over 30 years, has directed over 30 shows, including Carmen Jones and the West End / Broadway productions of Shirley Valentine, has directed many operas and written 16 books.

Associate Director is Dan Ayling; Set design by Fiammetta Horvat; Lighting design by Mark Howland and Sound Design by Alma Kelliher.
