London Theatre Scene Gearing Up for a Strong 2010 Season

The London theatre scene is set to have a strong 2010 season. Already announced is a mix of both revivals and original shows, as well as a solid combination of plays and musicals. In addition, a few hit Broadway transfers are set to travel across the pond and open along with UK originals this season. Variety reports on the upcoming season.

Set to open March 9th is Andrew Lloyd Webber's LOVE NEVER DIES, the follow-up to the hit musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Advance sales for LOVE NEVER DIES have already reached $8.5 million, more than double that of Webber's last foray in the London theatre scene, THE WOMAN IN WHITE.

Late spring will see the London transfer of HAIR, produced by Cameron Mackintosh. HAIR won 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Spring will also see the opening of the new Hal Prince/Susan Stroman musical, PARADISE FOUND, featuring a book by Richard Nelson, music by Johann Strauss II and lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh.

Several plays will make their mark on the London theatre scene in 2010. Noel Coward's PRIVATE LIVES will make its second revival on the West End featuring a cast including Kim Katrall and Matthew Macfadyen. The production will be directed by Richard Eyre.

London's acclaimed National Theatre has annuonced its first production of the season. Dion Boucicault's LONDON ASSURANCE will star Simon Russel Beale, Fiona Shaw, and Paul Ready. The production has been revamped by History Boys' director Nicholas Hytner.

Director Jamie Lloyd is already slated to direct 2 West End productions, including the UK premiere of THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED by Douglas Carter Beane, the Donmar Warehouse premiere of Mark Haddon's POLAR BEARS. Haddon authored the hit novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime."

Further productions on the London theatre scene have yet to be announced, including the full National Theatre season.
