The Fairground Theatre Company will present a cabaret of new musical theatre writing - The Writers' Playground - at the Union Theatre on Sunday September 7.

Fairground Theatre Company is a contemporary company founded by writer John Kristian & actress Kayleigh McKnight who, seeing the current trend of West End musicals being dominated by American imports and juke-box musicals, set out to provide a platform for new British writers to develop their work, whilst giving performers the opportunity to explore new writing and exposing audiences to fresh and exciting new theatre.

As part of their Songs Fom The Playrground Writers' Programme inititiative, the company recently presented a Songs From The Playground cabaret (see photo) and also staged The Homefront - John Kristian's emotionally powerful musical about homeless people on the streets of London - at the Union Theatre to high acclaim.

The Writers' Playground will bring together some of the best emerging British Musical Theatre writers to showcase their new writing - including Finn Anderson, James Robert Ball, Miracle Chance, Dan Looney, Stuart Matthew Price, and song-writing duos Rob Archibald and Verity Quade, Rob Eyles and Robert Gould, Tom Lees and Clare Rivers, Gary Albert Hughes and Tom Read Wilson, and Christopher J. Orton and Robert Gould. In addition to material by these emerging writers, the concert will also feature contributions from the pens of Olivier Award winning George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (Soho Cinders, Betty Blue Eyes, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Just So, Honk!).

The Stiles and Drewe songs will be performed by Lauren Samuels, who recently showcased the song-writers' material in Simon Greiff's workshop production of the revue Anything Can Happen at the St James Theatre. Samuels (stage musical star of Water Babies, We Will Rock You, Grease and The Last Five Years) rose to fame as a contestant in Over The Rainbow, Andrew Lloyd Webber's BBC television search for a star to play Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz.

The vocalists showcasing the new writing material will include Tori Allen-Martin, Hannah Blake, Laurence Boothman, Carmella Brown, Abigail Carter-Simpson, Turlough Convery, Jonathan Dudley, Alex James Ellison, Katrina Kleve, Shaun McCourt, Ceili O'Connor, Hannah O'Driscoll, Stuart Matthew Price, Sean Quigley, Harrison Spears, Ben Sell, Rosemary Stanford, Jodie Steele and Sasi Strallen.
