HUMANS star Gemma Chan will play 'Ruth' in the upcoming 50th anniversary production of Harold Pinter's THE HOMECOMING at Trafalgar Studios from November 14. According to the Daily Mail, Jamie Lloyd will direct Chan alongside Garry Kemp as 'Teddy', Ruth's husband.

Chan, who is "excited and daunted" to play the role, described her character, saying, "She is a complex woman who absolutely turns the tables on the men in the house. I don't see her as a victim in any way."

Talking to the Mail, Lloyd lauded the "very powerful sensuality" Chan will bring to the part. "Some people think it's a misogynistic play -- and Harold [Pinter] was horrified at that," he told the Mail. "It's about a woman who is in complete control of her own destiny."

Also in the cast are Ron Cook, Keith Allen, John Simm and John Macmillan.

First published in 1965, THE HOMECOMING premiered in London and on Broadway starring Vivien Merchant as Ruth and directed by Sir Peter Hall. It won the 1967 Tony Award for Best Play and was nominated for Best Revival in 2008. The play follows Teddy, who brings his wife, Ruth, home for the first time to meet his working-class family in London. Drama ensues.

Chan made her stage debut in TURANDOT at the Hampstead. She took the stage in 2012's THE SUGAR-COATED BULLETS OF THE BOURGEOISIE at Finborough and appeared in YELLOW FACE at the Park in 2013 before transferring to the West End. Chan also starred in OUR AJAX at Southwark Playhouse. She is known for her roles in the TV series SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL, FRESH MEAT, SHERLOCK and HUMANS.
