Rehearsals are once again well underway for Bristol's own multi award-winning Production Company, BLOC Productions, as they get ready to perform the inspiring musical Fiddler on the Roof at The Bristol Hippodrome this October.
Starring local cast members including Simon Vardakis (from Clevedon) as Tevye, Lucy Pope (from Westbury-on-Trym) as his wife Golda and Amber Andrews (from Bishopston) as the Matchmaker the 80 strong local ensemble, including a double casting of 44 children and a dynamic live orchestra are hoping to leave audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.
Featuring the songs Matchmaker, Sunrise Sunset and If I Were A Rich Man, the story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love - each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith - and with the edict of the Tsar to evict all the Jews from their village.
Susanne Donovan, Chairman of Bloc Productions commented 'For 2016 BLOC wanted to Raise the Roof of the Hippodrome with an inspiring story that is as relevant a political and social story now as it was half a century ago, and has appeal for all generations. Its universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion. We have a fantastically talentEd Strong cast of both principals and ensemble and we really hope everyone enjoys the show."
The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years until Grease surpassed its run. It remains Broadway's sixteenth longest-running show in history. The production was extraordinarily profitable and highly acclaimed. It won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned five Broadway revivals and a highly successful 1971 film adaptation, and the show has enjoyed enduring international popularity.
