Dame Helen Mirren, the Best Actress Oscar winner for her portrayal of England's Queen Elizabeth in the hit film "The Queen," portrays the tragic Queen Phedre in the acclaimed production of the Greek tragedy PHEDRE, making its only U.S. stage appearance now through September 26, 2009 at the Shakespeare Theatre Company (610 F. St. NW) in Washington, DC. England's National Theatre production of PHEDRE by Jean Racine (translated by Ted Hughes) has been an international sensation - on tour and via screenings of a taped live performance -- since it debuted earlier this year.
Following the First Night performance of PHEDRE last week, the cast of PHEDRE and director Nicholas Hytner joined Shakespeare Theatre Company's Artistic Director Michael Kahn for a reception at the residence of the British Ambassador to the U.S. in Washington, DC, Sir Nigel Sheinwald.
Mirren and her husband, film director Taylor Hackford, and PHEDRE co-stars Margaret Tyzack and Dominic Cooper were feted by the likes of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Alan Greenspan, Andrea Mitchell, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and George Stephanopoulos.
