Family Equality Council, which connects, supports, and represents the one million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parents raising two million children in the U.S., today released details about its Night at the Pier celebration on May 8 in New York City.

The 2012 Night at the Pier event will feature a Broadway-themed celebration of Family Equality Council’s 30th anniversary and mark the organization’s three decade history of creating a better world for LGBT families.

Honorees will include acclaimed producer Daryl Roth for her long-standing support of the LGBT community and her brave and tireless efforts in bringing the 2011 Tony Award winning production of The Normal Heart to Broadway audiences last spring. Scott Davenport will be honored for his enduring support of Family Equality Council and fierce advocacy work on behalf of LGBT parents and their children. A co-founder of Family Week, Scott has been a gay parent and activist for over 20 years. Scott was granted the first co-parent adoption in the District of Columbia, and was instrumental in forming Rainbow Families of DC.

Family Equality Council Executive Director Jennifer Chrisler said the Night at the Pier event will not only celebrate the organization but also celebrate the progress LGBT families have made over the last 30 years.

“Our families have grown from a handful of gay dads who gathered over coffee in Boston into a strong community of parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren who reach across the country,” said Chrisler. “Together we have raised the visibility of LGBT families and changed attitudes and laws to ensure all families are recognized, respected and protected.”
