The Flynn Center is pleased to announce that Anwar Diab Agha and his ensemble Grup Anwar of Burlington are the newest recipient of the Vermont Artists’ Space Grant. This work-in-progress showing presents the group's work, during the 10-week creation process, of bringing a suite of ten compositions reflecting Anwar’s experience in Vermont closer to completion.
Arabic composer and musician Anwar Diab Agha was born in Damascus, Syria in 1942, and is a famed artist in his native country. He studied with master oudists and violinists in Syria, and spent thirty years as a member of the Syrian National Radio and Television Orchestra. He has also toured internationally with some of the most famous musicians in the Arab world. After his retirement, Anwar lived on and off with his children in the US before becoming a Burlington resident and naturalized citizen in 2011.
The beauty of Vermont and the friendliness and generosity of its people have inspired Anwar to compose music reflecting these experiences, currently a work in progress. The group have been using the space for composition and as a workshop for developing new musical ideas and experimenting with arrangements.
