Now Playing Onstage in Vermont - Week of 8/17/2014 CABARET
Enosburg Opera House
8/22-8/23/2014
Cabaret is a musical based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The 1966 Broadway production became a hit, inspiring numerous subsequent productions in London and New York, as well as the 1972 film by the same name. It is based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it is based in nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fraulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. The club serves as a metaphor for the threatening state of late Weimar Germany.

Now Playing Onstage in Vermont - Week of 8/17/2014 THE SECRET GARDEN
Stowe Theatre Guild
8/13-8/30/2014
The Secret Garden is the story of Mary Lennox, an eleven year-old girl orphaned while living in India by an outbreak of Cholera. She is sent to the care of her uncle, Archibald Craven, a hunchback and a recluse who spends his days mourning the death of his wife, Lily, in a crumbling manor on the Yorkshire moors. Ignored by her uncle and reticent as a result of the many tragedies in her life, Mary at first rejects her new home. She is taken under the wing of the servants stationed at the Craven estate, Misselthwaite, and slowly comes out of her shell. She explores the manor's halls, its overgrown topiary maze, and the surrounding moors, discovering as she does that Misselthwaite holds many secrets. Among these are a garden, locked and forgotten after its caretaker, Lily, died, and a bed-ridden child, Colin-Archibald and Lily's son-hidden away by a wounded father and his jealous brother. Mary sets out to restore Lily's secret garden, along the way healing her sickly cousin and her haunted uncle. Adapted from the classic children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden was written by Lucy Simon (music) and Marsha Norman (lyrics). It premiered on Broadway in 1991, where it ran for 709 performances and received three Tony awards.
