Now Playing Onstage in Vermont - Week of 5/04/2014 ANI DIFRANCO
The Paramount Theatre
A folkie in punk's clothing, Ani DiFranco battled successfully against the Goliath of corporate rock to emerge as one of the most influential and inspirational cult heroines of the 1990s. A resolute follower of D.I.Y. ethos, DiFranco released her records through her own indie label, Righteous Babe, slowly but steadily building a devout grassroots following on the strength of a relentless tour schedule. An ardent feminist and an open bisexual, her songs tackled issues like rape, abortion, and sexism with insight and compassion, the music's empowering attitude and anger tempered by the poignant candor of singer/songwriter confessionalism.

Now Playing Onstage in Vermont - Week of 5/04/2014 THE QUARRY
Vermont Stage Company
An eerie discovery is made in the marble quarry of the Vermont town where Jean has spent her life - and now everything is changing. For the first time, she scrutinizes the complex and intertwining lives of her neighbors, all of whom are trying to keep it together as they are increasingly mystified by the goings-on in the rocky domain beneath their feet. This World Premiere combines original live music with a panoply of characters to create a world that explores unconventional relationships, notions of home, aging, Vermont geology, love, guilt, second chances, and the wide-ranging powers of the unknown. The Quarry is a new play by Shelburne native Greg Pierce, in collaboration with his brother, Randal Pierce, a local musician and composer. Greg Pierce is the author of the acclaimed play Slowgirl, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theater in 2012 followed by a production at Steppenwolf Theatre this summer. His musical The Landing, written with John Kander, will be produced by the Vineyard Theatre in the fall. These Vermont brothers are ones to watch!

Now Playing Onstage in Vermont - Week of 5/04/2014 BORN YESTERDAY
Lamoille County Players
Harry Brock, a loud-mouthed and corrupt junk dealer tycoon has come to Washington, D.C. to manipulate legislation of a crooked deal. He has brought along his long-time girl friend, Billie Dawn, a dim-witted and un-educated ex-chorus girl. Brock worries that Billie's lack of social graces will embarrass him and hires a magazine journalist to tutor his "dumb broad" to fit in with Washington society. Contrary to Brock's plan, Billie proves herself an unexpectedly apt pupil as she is learning how and what to read and even, vaguely, how to think. Written by one of America's outstanding playwrights, Born Yesterday is a brilliant comedy. Its strength lies in a smart and well-written script with a strong and intricate story of politics and emotions that is supported by characters of varied and vivid personalities. It is more than comedic entertainment, gently offering attitudes about ethical behavior, the value of learning and knowledge, human relationships, and self-worth. Further, it is a casually cynical take on American politics, and deals struck by greedy entrepreneurs. Although it is set in 1946 after World War II, we cannot help but notice its comical relevance to political manipulations of power behind the scenes, corruption, bribery, and whistle-blowing in today's D.C.
