Rainer Hersch Brings Singalong to Southbank Centre Today
Clap your hands...stamp your feet and laugh along as comedian Rainer Hersch conducts and hosts a brand new Yuletide treat: a jamboree of classic UK Singles Chart Christmas number ones. Terrific comic entertainment all served up with a big dollop of festive cheer.
From The Beatles to Mr Blobby, Harry Belafonte to the Human League and Benny Hill to the Military Wives, the race for the Christmas number one tells a unique story about the past half-century of British pop culture. Expect Bohemian Rhapsody, Hallelujah, Merry Christmas Everybody, Only You, Ernie (the fastest milkman in the West) and Mull of Kintyre plus a selection of cast-iron classics - Twelve Days of Christmas, Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
It's singalong, stand-up comedy and a show-stopping trip down memory lane all rolled into one with some cracking tunes along the way. Do they know it's Christmas? After this - no doubt about it.
Rainer Hersch is a comedian and conductor well known to BBC audiences for his many appearances - including as a regular guest on Loose Ends, Quote...Unquote and winner of a special celebrity edition of Counterpoint. From St Petersburg to Tasmania, he has led orchestras in performances combining stand-up comedy and music - hosting, conducting and cajoling both musicians and audience to bring off "the near-impossible - making a classical concert the coolest and funkiest show in town" (Canada Globe and Mail). Since 2009, Rainer has fronted the annual April Fools Day Concert at the Royal Festival Hall which has featured guests from Omid Djalili to Nicola Benedetti. Equally at home in both the concert hall and on the stand-up comedy stage, highlights of his last 12 month have included a 30-date UK tour with the Johann Strauss Orchestra plus tours for the Comedy Store in the United Arab Emirates and India.
The show will take place tonight, December 14 at 7:45 PM. Tickets are £20 and can be purchased online, on the phone 0844 847 9910. The program will take place at Purcell Room, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London, SE1 8XX.
