"We are such stuff as dreams are made on...."
Award-winning Theatre North bring their exuberant one-man adaptation of THE TEMPEST to the leading off-West End Jermyn Street Theatre, presenting a distinctive blend of physical theatre and Shakespeare's gloriously romantic text for one performance only on Valentines Day.
This acclaimed company specialises in work with a gay sub text - for both LGBTI and straight audiences - using the naked body as a tool for storytelling. Actor Martin Lewton wears only silver body paint in a performance that has been described as "a remarkable tour de force of storytelling and physical acting...boisterous, compelling, deeply touching" (G Scene).
MIRANDO THE GAY TEMPEST has been performed across the UK and in Barcelona. Last year it was flagged up as a "Top Ticket" by Lyn Gardner in The Guardian.
In this 70 minute version of THE TEMPEST, Prospero has a son - Mirando - not a daughter; and the great love scene is between two men. Created in the year of Equal Marriage, the show reflects not only on these new freedoms but also, as Prospero renounces his magic, on the gay subcultures that might be lost in this "brave new world".
THEATRE NORTH (www.theatrenorth.co.uk) was founded in Yorkshire in 2001 and has since staged more than 30 productions internationally.
MARTIN LEWTON (actor/writer) has most recently performed in a number of solo shows including NAKED HOMO, HANDEL'S CROSS and BILLY BUDD SAILOR for which he won the Star of the Brighton Festival award in 2011. He is Artistic Director of Theatre North and Director of the ¡BARCELONA SOLO! international festival of solo performance.
ANDREW MCKINNON (director) has run several major UK theatres, directed more than 100 plays and worked extensively with Theatre North. He is currently a postgraduate Course Director at both Birkbeck, University of London and the Institute of the Arts Barcelona.
