David Glass to Direct a Devised, Immersive Performance of SHINING at The Chine Hotel

A collaborative performance from BA (Hons) Acting, BA (Hons) Costumeand Performance Design, BA (Hons) Make Up for Media and Performance.

Director David Glass returns to Bournemouth to direct his debut of a devised immersive performance 'Shining', inspired by Stephen King's novel, The Shining and Stanley Kubrick's film of the same name. The performance will take place at the Chine Hotel in Bournemouth from 9 - 18 February 2017, while the hotel is closed for the winter season.

The Shining by Stephen King was first published in 1977 and was later released in 1980 as a film of the same name, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made, but at the time of its release never achieved any major awards.

David said: "It's an artistic challenge and privilege to direct this immersive performance of one of the classic horror stories of the 20th century. Setting the performance in this hotel will bring the story to life for the audience; it's uncannily similar to the Overlook Hotel in The Shining story as they are both closed for winter. I immediately saw the potential of setting the performance in this classic seaside hotel."

The Chine Hotel situated on the cliff top at Boscombe has its own theatrical connections. Set up as a family business by Frederik John Butterworth, who was a keen supporter of theatre, the hotel saw many famous actors staying there whilst performing at the Boscombe Hippodrome: Laurel and Hardy, Morecombe and Wise, Norman Wisdom, Vera Lynn, Charlie Chester and Frankie Howerd, to name but a few. Their photographs can be found adorning the walls of the hotel. To this day, FJB Hotels, still owns Boscombe Hippodrome and the Richmond Theatre in London.

The owners are thrilled to see the hotel used as the location for this debut performance and are excited to invite audiences to experience something completely unique in Bournemouth.

The production will run twice nightly at 6.30pm and 9pm on the following nights, from 9 to 18 February (excluding Sunday 12 February). Tickets cost £10/£8 and are strictly limited. These can be purchased at www.aub.ac.uk/boxoffice.
