Catch Maxine Peake's critically-acclaimed stage writing debut, Beryl when it comes to Birmingham Repertory Theatre this month, from 24 to 28 November. This witty and charming play commemorates the life of unsung sporting legend Beryl Burton, a remarkable woman and sportsperson who, shockingly, most have never even heard about.

Rebecca Gatward directs this thrilling play about the loves, trials and tribulations of the down-to-earth Yorkshire sporting heroine, starring Samantha Power (Coronation Street, Little Britain, Doctors) in the title role of cycling champion Beryl Burton and Rebecca Ryan (Debbie Gallagher in Shameless) as her daughter, alongside Matthew Ganley and Lee Toomes.

When Beryl Charnock met keen cyclist Charlie Burton she was smitten, not only with Charlie but by the thrill and freedom she found on a bike.

Beryl was better than good, she was the best and determined to remain so. With husband, daughter and cycling club at her side, she became five times World Pursuit Champion, thirteen times National Pursuit Champion, twice Road-Racing World Champion and always made it home in time for dinner.
