Anthony Calf Leads DEATH AND THE MAIDEN At Comedy Theatre, Sept 13

The role of Gerado, the husband of Paulina Salas (Thandie Newton), will be played by Tom Goodman-Hill, and Doctor Roberto Miranda will be played by Anthony Calf in Ariel Dorfman's Olivier award-winning thriller Death and the Maiden. The play will open at the Comedy Theatre from Thursday 13th October 2011. Jeremy Herrin, Deputy Artistic Director of the Royal Court, will direct and the production will be designed by Peter McKintosh.

Olivier Award nominee Tom Goodman-Hill has performed in a number of West End productions including Enron, Monty Python's Spamalot (Olivier Award nominee for Best Supporting Performer in a Musical) and An Inspector Calls. Tom has also appeared in Earthquakes in London and Tartuffe (National Theatre), as well as Bartholomew Fair, Talk of the City and The Two Gentlemen of Verona for the RSC.

Anthony Calf has appeared in numerous Theatre productions for the Donmar Warehouse, National Theatre and The Royal Court. Recent credits include: Les Parents Terribles (Donmar Trafalgar Season), The Deep Blue Sea (Chichester Festival Theatre), Rock ‘n' Roll (Royal Court Theatre), The White Guard and The Power of Yes (National Theatre). Anthony's recent television credits include the 2010 remake of Upstairs, Downstairs and Holby City (BBC).

This will be the first West End production of Dorfman's 1990 play since the world premiere at the Royal Court in 1991 which transferred to the Duke of York's Theatre in 1992 where it played for 12 months. Subsequently, the play was produced on Broadway and adapted into a film.

The play is an intense and thrilling account of confession and revenge set against the backdrop of a new democracy, emerging from a long period of dictatorship.

Years have passed since political prisoner, Paulina, suffered at the hands of her captor: A man whose face she never saw, but whose voice and mannerisms can still recall with terrifying clarity.

One evening, by chance, a stranger arrives at the secluded beach house she shares with her husband Gerardo, a human rights lawyer. A stranger Paulina is convinced was her tormentor and must now be held to account...

Thandie Newton was awarded a BAFTA for her role in Crash, Paul Haggis' Oscar-winning film about racial and social tensions in Los Angeles. She also starred in the title role in Beloved opposite Oprah Winfrey and in Mission Impossible II with Tom Cruise. She appeared in The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith and playEd Simon Pegg's ex-girlfriend in Run Fat Boy Run. She played Condoleezza Rice in Oliver Stone's W and the US President's daughter in 2012. She was most recently seen in Huge and is currently filming Good Deeds, written and directed by Tyler Perry, whom also stars.

Jeremy Herrin is the Deputy Artistic Director at the Royal Court where he has directed Polly Stenham's plays That Face and Tusk Tusk, David Hare's The Vertical Hour, Michael Wynne's The Priory, Richard Bean's The Heretic and other new writing. This year he made his Shakespearean debut directing the acclaimed production of Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre with Eve Best and Charles Edwards, and will direct South Downs at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester in September.

· Ariel Dorfman, the Chilean-American author of numerous works of fiction, plays, poems, screenplays and essays in both Spanish and English, holds the Walter Hines Page Chair at Duke University, North Carolina. His books have been translated into over forty languages and his plays staged in more than one hundred countries. Among his plays are Widows and Reader, which have won awards from the Kennedy Center and been staged worldwide. Other plays include Purgatorio, The Other Side/Delirium, Picasso's Closet and Speak Truth to Power. In 1995 his film Prisoners in Time, a BBC Teleplay co-written with Rodrigo Dorfman, won Best Feature Film Screenplay at the WGGB Awards. Currently optioned films are Shaheed, Burning City and an adaptation of his novel Blake's Therapy. This Autumn he will publish Feeding on Dreams, a sequel to the memoir Heading South, Looking North, on which the Oscar short-listed documentary, A Promise to the Dead is based. He has also written the libretto for Dancing Shadows, a musical with songs by Eric Woolfson (lead composer and vocalist of the Alan Parsons Project) that opened recently in Seoul, winning five Korean Tony awards. He is active in the defence of human rights and his articles are published in the most important broadsheet newspapers worldwide. In 2010 he delivered the Mandela Lecture in South Africa. He is currently working on a new opera, Naciketa.

· BAFTA Award-winning Thandie Newton has most recently been seen in Huge, Ben Miller's directorial debut starring award-winning British actor Noel Clarke and Johnny Harris. She is currently filming Good Deeds written, starring and directed by Tyler Perry. The film in which Newton plays lead character Lindsey is due for an early 2012 release. Earlier this year Newton also appeared in Vanishing on 7th Street directed by Brad Anderson in which she starred opposite Hayden Christensen and John Leguizamo. Newton was recently seen in For Colored Girls, the adaptation of Ntozake Shange's choreopoem directed by Tyler Perry for LionsGate. She starred opposite Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson and Kimberly Elise. She was also recently seen in the independent psychological thriller The Retreat opposite Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell, directed by Carl Tibbetts. In 2009 Newton starred in Roland Emmerich's 2012 for Columbia, which revolves around an academic researcher who battles to prevent an apocalypse predicted by the ancient Mayans. She stars in the film opposite John Cusack, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson, Amanda Peet, and Danny Glover. The film grossed over $750 million worldwide. Newton was praised for her work in the Academy Award-winning Best Picture of 2006: Crash, the story of a multiracial group of characters whose lives interconnect following a car accident in Los Angeles. For her performance, Thandie received BAFTA (Outstanding Supporting Actress) and SAG (Best Ensemble) Awards. Newton also starred in RocknRolla, written and directed by Guy Ritchie, opposite Gerard Butler and Olive Stone's film W, as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice opposite Josh Brolin, James Cromwell, Elizabeth Banks and Ellen Burstyn. Other films have included David Schwimmer's comedy Run Fat Boy Run opposite Hank Azaria and Simon Pegg, Gabriele Muccino's critically acclaimed box office hit The Pursuit of Happyness opposite Will Smith, Jonathan Demme's contemporary romantic thriller The Truth About Charlie, inspired by Stanley Donen's 1963 film Charade and the John Woo-helmed action film Mission Impossible II. Beyond acting, Thandie has supported several causes and charities. Death and the Maiden is produced and general managed by Creative Management and Productions (CMP), established by theatre producers Nick Frankfort and Tobias Round. Formed in 2006, the company is committed to commissioning and presenting high quality plays and musicals, as well as delivering management services for a select group of performing arts practitioners and organisations.

Nick Frankfort was formerly Executive Producer of the Donmar Warehouse and has over twenty years of experience in the theatre industry. Tobias Round worked at IMG and Adventures in Motion Pictures before joining the Donmar Warehouse as General Manager in 2003.

Lyndi Adler is an Australian based producer with over twenty years' experience.
Her stage credits include High School Musical and feature film credits include Three Dollars starring David Wenham and Francis O'Conor and Prey featuring Natalie Bassingthwaite.
In other Theatre Projects, she produced 1 Night Stand, featuring the best of Australia's stand-up comics, which toured a number of Australian cities in 2006-07.
