After wowing sold-out crowds and leaving critics united in praise, VideoCabaret is announcing that the closing date of its remount of The Great War, the latest re-imagining of playwright Michael Hollingsworth's acclaimed The History of the Small Huts cycle, will be December 5.

The magical black box style and razor sharp wit of this latest installment have captured audiences and reviewers since this remount first took to the stage on October 26. In two fast-paced 55-minute acts, seven actors transform into over 40 characters-from the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to the infantry grunts long forgotten in history textbooks-to recreate the tragedies and triumphs of Canada's soldiers.

What critics are saying about the latest remount of The Great War:
"Michael Hollingsworth and his wonderful company VideoCabaret produces theatre for people who grew up on TV and rock and rollŠ The story is told in short, sharp scenes that are grippingŠ the gifted cast of seven play multiple characters with style and witŠ it's intense and hilarious resulting in the most entertaining history lesson we will ever have."
- Lynn Slotkin, CBC Radio One's Here and Now

"Michael Hollingsworth's direction is as pointed and inventive as ever, Andy Moro's lighting as devastatingly precise, Astrid Janson and Sarah Armstrong's costumes as over-the-top gorgeous. And Hollingsworth's script may be his best ever."
- Robert Cushman, National Post

"What's special about this production is that in addition to its entertaining clownishness, there's a serious emotional note. It comes from the focus on a group of infantrymen who start out with a high-minded, patriotic view of the First World War and discover the pain and horror of actual combat. It's a truly moving show, one worth catching.
- Jon Kaplan, NOW Magazine
What critics said about The Great War in Spring 2010:
"A broadly satirical treatment of the 'war to end all wars' that skillfully negotiates a bayonet's edge between farce and tragedy... Hollingsworth and his seven flexible actors... do a brilliant job of encapsulating both its lunacy and its horrors."
- Martin Morrow, The Globe and Mail

"The staging is remarkable, Andy Moro's multi-cue lighting is a tour de force, and the costumes of Astrid Janson and Sarah Armstrong are as imaginative and eye-catching as ever. If you've never seen VideoCab's unique work, this is the perfect place to start; if you have, you certainly won't want to miss this one."
- Robert Crew, Toronto Star
