It's the early 1950s and Thelma, a penniless waitress works tables in a coffee shop on a lonesome highway in west Texas. Disappointed in her tip, she murders a handsome drifter, steals his pick-up truck, and sets off in search of 'the right pair of shoes'. Hot on her trail, the State highway patrol pursues but during a high-speed car chase, the waitress skids off the road and dies in a grizzly fire-ball. Or does she?

In a landscape of dust, heat, and tumbleweed-in a series of harrowingly funny scenes-Thelma mates with and murders her lovers across three states, all the time escaping punishment as she races against Time to reach a secret test site at Los Alamos for a rendezvous with an atomic blast!
