Hart House Theatre presents Morris Panych's Enduring Comedy 7 STORIES

Opening March 3 for a limited run, Hart House Theatre is pleased to present a Canadian favourite, the quirky comedy 7 Stories. Directed by emergent talent, Rebecca Ballarin, and starring a cast of young professionals, 7 Stories promises to close the 2016/2017 Hart House Theatre Season on a high, comedic note.

A man stands on a seventh-storey building ledge and contemplates suicide. Before he can get too far, he is confronted by the self-absorbed (and oftentimes absurd) people who live inside the building. In 7 Stories, multi award winning Canadian playwright, Morris Panych, creates a meta-theatrical gem of a black comedy; full of fanciful characters with a wistfully existential conclusion.

Rebecca Ballarin We are thrilled to welcome Rebecca Ballarin to the director's seat for this production. No stranger to Hart House Theatre, Rebecca has performed on our stage as a student, worked as an usher while completing her studies at U of T and served as an assistant director. When asked why this play has such an audience following, Rebecca had this to say:

"In 7 Stories, Morris Panych plumbs the depths of the human experience, using the absurd and surreal to explore some of the biggest questions we face as we move through our lives: What is the meaning of life? What is our purpose? What do we value and why?

Each character in the play is torn between needing structure and boundaries and longing to escape them; between wanting knowledge and control while craving mystery and excitement. Their eccentricities are rooted in very real fears and passions, making them both a challenge and a joy to bring to life.

A Canadian classic that premiered almost 30 years ago, 7 Stories remains relevant because Panych created characters that reflect the context in which the play is performed: Today, that's a society where disillusionment, unpredictability and fear are widespread, and where increased connectivity often results in greater disconnection.

Come to laugh, to think, and to leave the theatre seeing things a little differently."

Helping to shape the absurd and surreal ledge of the building are design team Jenna McCutchen (set), Melissa Joakim (lights), Daina Valiulis (costumes) and Miquelon Rodriguez (sound).
