Although the legendary Duke Ellington passed away on May 24, 1974, nearly 40 years ago, his fame and stature continue to grow and blossom. Just this past year alone, After Midnight, a big band musical featuring all-Ellington music in a tribute to Harlem's famous Cotton Club, opened on Broadway and is one of the favorites for winning a TONY Award this year; an SRO audience cheered the hundreds of students who participated in Arranging Ellington, concert of Ellington's sacred music, at Carnegie Hall this past March 23; and the Duke Ellington Center Big Band is finalizing plans for concert tours of France and the US during the upcoming year. Theatre Communications Group (TCG) announces the 2014 Round 2 Cycle B recipients of the Leadership U[niversity]-Continuing Ed program. Through the support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, grants of up to $5,000 will support four mid-career and veteran theatre professionals at TCG Member Theatres for learning opportunities to advance their leadership skills. Two years ago, The New Ohio Theatre and IRT Theater (new neighbors in the historic Archive Building on Christopher Street) kicked-off their exciting new developing and presenting initiative: the Archive Residency. The Archive Residency offers select independent theatre companies a two-year commitment of space, artistic support, and institutional continuity for the development and presentation of a new work. This season's New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) conclude with a focus on Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1, led by Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Joshua Weilerstein and featuring pianist Paul Lewis, today, April 12, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. This is the final program in this season's series, Points of Entry, in which each concert explores facets of music and the orchestra itself through one influential score. A loan exhibition devoted entirely to Chinese calligraphy- including masterpieces by some of the most renowned practitioners in Chinese history-will open at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on April 29 and run through August 17. Featuring more than 40 works, from towering scrolls designed to fill reception halls to intimate works meant to be enjoyed by lone scholars in their studios, Out of Character: Decoding Chinese Calligraphy-Selections from the Collection of Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang will introduce viewers to the art of the written word that was prized above all other visual art forms in traditional China. The selection of works and their interpretation in the galleries are intended to speak to beginners and specialists alike, using artworks of the highest quality to introduce key concepts of format, script type, and style. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the 16th-century album by Wen Peng (1497-1573) called The 1000-Character Classic; consisting of 85 leaves, it will fill a 25-foot-long wall. (more...)

Attendees included NYC Parks First Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh, Knicks legends Walt 'Clyde' Frazier and Anthony Mason, Liberty legend Kym Hampton, the Knicks City Dancers, Partner and PwC New York Market Youth Education Leader Mitch Roschelle, students from PS 161 -The Arthur Ashe School, and more than 120 volunteers from PwC, the Knicks, and NYC Parks. The New York Philharmonic Ensembles, composed of musicians from the Orchestra, will give its last performance of the 2013-14 season on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Merkin Concert Hall with a concert featuring Bartok's 44 Duos for 2 Violins, Nos. 26-44; Fanny Mendelssohn's String Quartet; and Vaughan Williams's Piano Quintet. On Wednesday, April 9, more than 270 friends of God's Love We Deliver gathered at the 11th Annual Authors In Kind. This literary luncheon, held at the Metropolitan Club, was emceed by Board Member, author extraordinaire and Authors In Kind founder, Linda Fairstein. Linda introduced each guest author, who then took the podium to share anecdotes and remarks about their work to the delight of our many guests. Known for the exquisite beauty of his films and hailed as one of the greatest filmmakers ever by many critics, scholars, and filmmakers, Kenji Mizoguchi (1898-1956) produced 85 films that spanned the silent and sound eras in Japan.Of these works, only 30 exist today. Museum of the Moving Image and the Japan Foundation will present all of these extant works in a major retrospective-the first in North America in nearly 20 years and the first to feature all 30 titles-from May 2 through June 8, 2014.
