Musical Explorers, an education program for New York City students in grades K-2 developed by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute (WMI), builds basic music skills in the classroom as children learn songs from different cultures, reflect on their own communities, and develop singing and listening skills. Each year, the program culminates in a series of concerts held in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall at the end of the fall and spring semesters, with artists representing the wide variety of cultures and styles found throughout New York City's five boroughs. Artists performing in this year's concerts include Haitian singer Emeline Michel, Michael Farkas and his jug band The Wiyos, Argentinian musicians Sofia Rei and Sofia Tosello, Yiddish folk violinist Yale Strom, Mexican harpist Celso Duarte, and classical tenor Dan Snyder. This season's concerts are scheduled for today, December 9-12, 2014 and May 5-8, 2015. (more...)

Glassmaking originated around 2500 B.C. in Mesopotamia, and by the mid-first millennium B.C. it had spread throughout the ancient world. The number of vessels made from glass remained limited, however, until the introduction of two important technical advances-the use of the blowpipe and closed multipart molds-in the late first century B.C. and the early first century A.D., respectively. These advances revolutionized the glass industry under the Roman Empire, making glass vessels accessible to all and allowing producers to create a wide range of shapes, sizes, and usages. Some of the earliest vessels made by mold blowing bear the names of the craftsmen who "signed" the molds. (more...)

The pioneering early music series Concerts at The Cloisters will expand its offerings in winter and spring 2014-15 to include musical performances from the Latin and Byzantine traditions; songs from northeastern France; a scholarly reconstruction of a Palm Sunday procession; and a mesmerizing concert of medieval, Baroque, and contemporary music set to the text of Psalm 116. Concerts will take place within the historic apse of the 12th-century church of San Martin from FuentidueƱa near Segovia, Spain, or -- new this season -- in galleries at The Cloisters. Clad in all black and wearing a Dia de los Muertos mask, the pianist takes his seat. The cellist follows. From the back of the theater, the Grim Reaper wearing his black cape, white mask, and carrying his trademark scythe, seems to float through the audience, reminiscent of the way a priest enters a cathedral to celebrate a mass. Accompanied by Elton John's requiem-like instrumental, 'Funeral For a Friend' (from the 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), the beginning of Thomas Honeck's show at the Duplex, Dancing with Death, starts as a macabre ritual.
