Cabrillo Music Theatre is honored to announce the formation of the SELVIN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP. Harry and Maureen Selvin, longtime patrons of the arts and supporters of Cabrillo Music Theatre, have developed this scholarship, to be presented on the final performance of each Cabrillo Music Theatre production, to the performer in that Cabrillo show that best exemplifies the spirit of Cabrillo Music Theatre. Recipients will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, a personal trophy, and name recognition on a permanent plaque of all those recognized, to reside in the Cabrillo Music Theatre office.

The brainchild of philanthropists Harry and Maureen Selvin, the idea of the SELVIN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP came from seeing many years of Cabrillo shows from their front-row Opening Night seats, plus attending rehearsals, auditions, and visiting with many cast members.

Maureen Selvin says, "Harry and I have always been impressed by the talent, dedication, and hard work of the young people who have appeared in Cabrillo Music Theatre shows. We've always wanted to find a way to recognize these qualities, and the scholarship is the result of that desire."

Adds Harry Selvin, "The key word for me has always been, 'Passion.' In business, in theatre, in life.... You have to have passion to really get ahead. The kids in Cabrillo shows present a great deal of passion in their work!"

The SELVIN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP will be judged on an informal basis. All actors who appear in a Cabrillo Music Theatre show are eligible, regardless of size of role, with no special application required. Input will be provided by key members of the Cabrillo Music Theatre production staff who are close to the rehearsal and performance process, and who have unique insight into the performers' contributions. Attributes to be considered include raw talent, growth during the rehearsal/performance process, work ethic, treatment of other performers, staff and crew, and, of course, passion.

The final decision will be made during the show's run by Harry and Maureen Selvin, in consultation with Cabrillo's Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld. The award will be presented onstage, immediately preceding the final performance of a production, by the Selvins and Wilkenfeld. The most recent past recipient will also be invited to be part of the presentation.

The SELVIN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP will commence with the first show of the 2014-15 season, Cabrillo Music Theatre's brand-new production of MEMPHIS, the first in this part of the country. MEMPHIS opens this Friday, November 14th, 2014, playing until Sunday, November 23rd, at the 1,800-seat Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, located at 2100 Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Thousand Oaks.
