SPEED THE PLOW, ON GOLDEN POND & More Set for Theatre Artists Studio's 2014-15 Season

The Studio has announced its 2014-2015 season. Here's a breakdown of currently scheduled events and dates!

Baby with the Bathwater, by Christopher Durang; September 5 - 21, 2014
A bitingly satirical and provocative comedy that skewers parenthood with savagely gleeful wit and outrageous humor.

Durang is uber-hot . . . AGAIN. His wickedly funny Chekhovian mash-up, "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" was a run-away success on Broadway in 2013. While Baby premiered in 1983, its biting commentary on permissive parenting and sexual identity are not only pertinent today, they present two of the most relevant issues facing modern society.

Speed the Plow, by David Mamet; October 17 - November 2, 2014
Two Hollywood insiders and a seemingly innocent newcomer straddle the chasm between business and art while they debate whether to produce a spiritual novel or a surefire blockbuster.

Notable: While Mamet may be better known for his Pulitzer-Prize winning Glengarry Glen Ross, a scathing depiction of four desperate real estate agents, Speed the Plow received a Tony nomination when it premiered, and who doesn't love a satirical dissection of the greed of Hollywood?

On Golden Pond, by Ernest Thompson; November 28 - December 14, 2014
The love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, an elderly couple returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. Mix in their divorced daughter, her dentist fiancé and his teenage son, and you have a recipe for sharp comedy, hard truths and a healthy dash of hope.

Notable: The stage version has all the meat of the story without the saccharin of the screenplay. Warning - this is NOT the movie!

Rapture, Blister, Burn, by Gina Gionfriddo; January 16 - February 1, 2015
Two former friends, each coveting the other's life, commence a dangerous game of musical chairs, with the prize being the life they both think they want. As three generations of women dissect the situation with cutting but sympathetic humor, they discover their personal insights on feminism are not what they expected.

An Arizona Premiere of a finalist for 2013's Pulitzer Prize in drama, this sizzling new work either presents a twisted view of feminism . . . or feminism with a new twist - you decide!

The Heiress, by Ruth and Augustus Goetz; February 27 - March 15, 2015
A compelling, psychological tale of a young woman's journey to win the affection of a distant and disappointed father, to experience the joys of romantic love and, ultimately, to discover her own place in the world. Suggested by the Henry James classic novel Washington Square.

Set in 1850, this play marks the first time The Studio has presented a 19th century period piece.

TBA - April 10-28, 2015

Painting Churches, by Tina Howe; May 22 - June 7, 2015
After decades of happiness and success in their elegant Boston townhouse, the Churches find their fortunes and health are in decline and they must downsize. Their artist daughter arrives to help them pack-and to capture the moment in a family portrait.

New Summer Shorts 2015; June 18-28, 2015
The Studio's annual 10-minute play festival featuring works by Studio member writers.

Notable: The Valley's only annual short play festival that features all new works by Studio members.

Show times are Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. All productions will run for three weekends, with the exception of New Summer Shorts, which runs for two.

Tickets are $20 for General Admission; $15 each for Groups of 10 or More, Seniors age 65 and over and members of the military (active and retired) and $10 for Students age 25 and under.
