Earlier this evening Hayes Theatre Co unveiled the shows that will be making up Act Two of 2017 with productions to be staged from July through to December 2017.

We are thrilled to be welcoming Olympic Champion and cabaret star Matthew Mitcham with his latest show UNDER THE COVERS for 5 performances from 19 July. This will be followed by two Hayes Theatre Co produced shows; the World Premiere of MELBA A new musical by Nicholas Christo and Johannes Luebbers - starring the incredible Emma Matthews and directed by Wayne Harrison from 11 August followed by the Stephen Sondheim musical ASSASSINS, starring our own David Campbell amongst a stellar cast.

The year will finish with HIGH FIDELITY, a co-production between Neil Gooding Productions and Highway Run Productions, and starring Toby Francis, currently touring as Charlie in Kinky Boots.

We can't wait to bring you these amazing productions and have no doubt that just like every other show this year tickets will go quickly, so don't wait to book!

UNDER THE COVERS

Matthew Mitcham burst onto the cabaret scene in 2014 with the refreshingly real, multi-award-winning musical comedy, Twists and Turns and in 2017 he returns with a brand-new show, UNDER THE COVERS.

Mitcham returns with even more effervescence, charm and hilariously-brutal honesty as he delivers a few Public Service Announcements he's learnt through trial and (mostly) error...plus a few new tricks stuffed up his bulging sleeves. Matthew has become renowned for his unique approach to story-telling that is both raw and compelling.

Accompanied by cross-dressing cabaret legend SPANKY (two times Best Cabaret Perth Fringe World winner), this brand new all singing, all dancing production will make audiences feel better about their own life choices in perfect three-part harmony.

Under The Covers has been created by the same team who creatEd Matthew's previous multi-award-winning musical comedy Twists and Turns; including Matthew, award winning director Nigel Turner-Carroll and international cabaret sensation Spanky (aka Rhys Morgan).

Following the success of his first show, Mitcham has proven himself to be a thoroughly entertaining performer, even surprising audiences with actual talent. Matthew's previous show, Twists and Turns won "Best Cabaret" when it premiered at Perth Fringe World in 2015.

MELBA, A new musical

Hayes Theatre Co and New Musicals Australia are delighted to present the world premiere of new Australian musical, MELBA.

Originally developed through the New Musicals Australia program, this will be the second work to make it to the stage as a result of the NMA process.

With book and lyrics by Nicholas Christo and a contemporary score by Johannes Luebbers, MELBA will blend music theatre with opera in a musical about one of Australia's greatest ever stars, Dame Nellie Melba, adapted from the biography 'Marvelous Melba' by Ann Blainey. This production follows Nellie through her journey from outback Australia to the world stage, her trials and triumphs, and the scandal that nearly destroyed her career and led to a heart-breaking loss.

Australia's Wayne Harrison returns to Sydney to direct this new musical. "I've always been a Melba fan," says Wayne. "As a kid I thought it was cool that you could have a dessert named after you. As a dramaturg I thought it was extra cool that one of her boyfriends was the first Australian playwright to have his work produced on Broadway. As a director I welcome the opportunity to discover Melba as a 'New Woman' and a mother, juggling both at the turn of a new century, just as Australia became a Federation and her son, raised by hand or by proxy, became a symbol of what this new nation might be. As a coda, the things that keep me in Melba's orbit: she was a great singer, she always remained Australian, and she was a superstar, long before the word had been invented."

Starring Australian opera superstar Emma Matthews as Melba with Annie Aitken as the younger Nellie and featuring a stellar cast including Michael Blakley, Caitlin Berry, Andrew Cutcliffe, Blake Erickson, Adam Rennie and Samuel Skuthorp, and musical director Michael Tyack, MELBA will uncover the woman behind the star, who flew in the face of society to make her way to the top.

ASSASSINS

Hayes Theatre Co is delighted to present the most controversial musical of the 20th Century, ASSASSINS by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman.

Since opening the doors in 2014, Hayes Theatre Co has been anxious to present a Stephen Sondheim musical, and we are delighted that the first musical of these will be the one considered by Sondheim himself as coming the closest to his expectations for the show.

We are thrilled to be welcoming back to the theatre, director Dean Bryant, whose previous productions of Sweet Charity and Little Shop of Horrors were critically and popularly acclaimed and went on to tour throughout Australia. Joining Dean are musical directors Lucy Bermingham (Songs For a New World, Violet) and Andrew Worboys (Little Shop of Horrors, Rent, Sweet Charity).

The cast will include our own David Campbell as John Wilkes Booth and David will be joined by an incredible cast including his Dream Lover co-star, Hannah Fredericksen, alongside Connor Crawford, Martin Crewes and Madeleine Jones with more exciting casting announcements to come.
