SteppingStone to Present LITTLE BIRD THAT WAS CAUGHT, 10/18-11/2
SteppingStone Theatre will present Little Bird That Was Caught: The Story of Jane Gibbs by Jenna Zark, music by Eugene Huddleston and based on the book by Anne E. Neuberger. The show will run October 18-November 2, 2013.
In 1834, a series of misunderstandings brings the orphaned Jane Gibbs away from the rest of her family to to Minnesota and a family that didn¹t want her. To escape the troubles at home, young Jane forged friendships with the Mdewakanton Dakota, learned their language, and soon enough the ³Little Bird that was Caught² became an ambassador between cultures and families. From then on, Jane lived in two worlds, that of the white missionary family, and of the native people who treated her like a daughter. She spoke two languages, lived by two sets of rules, and answered to two names: Jane and "Little Bird That Was Caught." This true story tells of Jane¹s amazing experiences as a child of two cultures.
Terry Swanson, the site manager for the Gibbs Farm & Museum, part of the Minnesota Historical Society, says, The Mdewakanton Dakota were Minnesota¹s first people, and the relationship that formed between Jane and the Dakota was truly unique. Productions like SteppingStone¹s Little Bird That Was Caught continue to be important and relevant to today. SteppingStone has taken a cultural tale and made it speak to today's audience, rather than simply presenting a historical or mono-cultural piece. We can learn a lot from Jane Debow Gibbs, such as the importance cross-cultural understanding, and how to create Œfamily¹ out of adversity and cultural divisiveness. The issues that are brought up in the production connect to all of us today.
Little Bird That Was Caught: The Jane Gibbs Story is an encore of an earlier production, revised and energized anew. Families of all ages will enjoy this uplifting and spirited production.
