Three giant names of symphonic repertoire of all time – Händel, Mozart and Beethoven – and three essential works: the most popular orchestral suite ever written in England, the most elegant work for solo violin-viola duet, and the most played overture by the genius Beethoven.
Three names, three works and three musical cities: London hosted the first performance of the Water Music, with Händel also as conductor of the premiere staged on a barge sailing the waters of the Thames; Salzburg heard for the first time the Sinfonia Concertante, and in all probability, Mozart on that occasion took on the role of solo viola; and Vienna received the Coriolan Overture under the baton of Beethoven, when his deafness was already clear, but he still felt strong enough to make public performances.
