At the time, it was said that Beethoven had gone too far: that nobody could “put up with” an hour of symphonic music. That using a choir at the end of the symphony was a sign of madness. But that they forgave him for everything because he had gone completely deaf. Over the years, however, the work has continued to be performed and audiences have continued to submit to it: the Symphony No. 9 (“the Choral”) ended up being what Beethoven had dreamed: a hymn to brotherhood among men. Listening to it live is an experience that should not be missed.
