South Bend Civic Theatre Holds Open House for Performing Arts Camp Today

SBCT is hosting a Performing Arts Summer Camp Open House today March 8 from 10:30a-12:30p at South Bend Civic Theatre, 403 N. Main Street in South Bend. SBCT's summer camps are the perfect way to help students find and nurture the creative spark of performing. The Open House will give students and parents a taste of theatre, allowing them parents to sample the summer fare we will be offered from June-August at SBCT. Visitors will be given the opportunity to meet SBCT's teachers as well as participating in mini-workshops around the theatre to experience a bit of the fun that campers will have at SBCT this summer. Kids can also try on fun costumes and free popcorn will be served! Scholarship information and the application process will be available at the Open House as well.

Scheduled Camps and Pricing for the summer is listed below:

Teen Filmmakers
8th- 12th grades (6th and 7th grades by permission)
June 23-27, 1:00-5:00 $125

Led by the award-winning filmmaker and teacher, Kathleen Brack (FTT Notre Dame). Learn how to make a polished film short, using readily available technology like tablets and cell phones. You'll create and edit a film, creating scenarios, storyboards and screenplay, scouting locations, and editing the final product to share at the end-of-camp party and private screening. Afterwards, you'll have the skills you need to start making movies on your own, using the equipment you have.

Young Performers Institute: Broadway Boot Camp
6th-12th grades - By permission or recommendation
July 7-18, 9:30-4:30 $400

Become a true "triple threat"-dance and act, and sing. South Bend Civic Theatre and Southold Dance Theatre join forces to offer a week of intense training, performance experience, and serious fun for committed young actors, singers, and dancers. Each morning, performers take music theatre dance class (incorporating jazz, tap, and ballet, a voice lesson and an acting class. You'll also choose a focus for individual coaching: vocal performance, dance, or acting. In the afternoon you'll rehearse the exciting and explosive production numbers "The Dance at the Gym" and "America" from West Side Story in preparation for your finale showcase performance on stage at South Bend Civic Theatre.

Creative Mini-Musical Performance Camp
K-2nd grades
July 28-August 1, 9:00-12:00 or August 4-8, 1:00-4:00 $125

Using the theatrical magic of creative dramatics, campers will transform a favorite story into a mini-musical, complete with props they'll design and craft themselves. It's a week of music, movement and imagination, culminating with a festive performance for families and friends.

June 16-20, 1:00-4:00 or July 21-25, 9:00-12:00

Myths & Adventure. 2nd-3rd grades
July 7-27, 9:00-12:00 or July 21-25, 1:00-4:00

Magic Treehouse. K-2nd grades
July 14-18, 9:00-12:00 or July 28-August 1, 1:00-4:00

Music, creative dramatics and crafts come together for three creativity-packed hours each day. Campers will create their own show-- complete with props they'll make themselves-- and enjoy the excitement of performing it for their invited audience. Creative drama builds confidence and creativity, deepens literacy and inspires friendship. Shy kids discover boldness. Wild kids find focus. Everyone has fun.

Creative Musical Theatre Performance Camp
3nd-5th grades
Two weeks long: June 16-20 and June 23-27, 9:00-12:00 $250

Rehearse and perform an original musical this summer in this special two week performance camp! The Noble Gnarble tells the story of a tiny sea creature with a big dream-and a whole lot of fascinating friends and not-so-good friends. It's a fantasy undersea world filled with creative song and dance.

Time Travel Theatre
5th-8th grades
July 14-18, 9:00-12:30 $125

This unique camp combines hands-on history with full-on musical theatre. Campers will explore the lives of Midwest kids during the 1930's at The Center for History in South Bend, then use their discoveries as they act, sing and dance in a new musical revue, featuring songs from Annie, Les Miserables, Oliver and others. Along the way, they'll learn audition and rehearsal skills, make new friends, and experience the excitement of performance. The finale of camp: opening "night"!
