Peter Gilchrist as Oscar Wilde

Peter Gilchrist wraps up the year in his tribute show to Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward, OSCAR & NOEL ENCORE, at the Alexander Bar and Café Upstairs Theatre.

In the 65-minute show, an illusion is created through which the audience joins Oscar Wilde in his study to share his life, to chat about his adoration of Lily Langtry, among others, and his eventual marriage to Constance Lloyd - all sprinkled with wit! The audience is invited to share the delightfully absurd Lord Goring and his manservant, Phipps, and revel in the macabre story of the picture of Dorian Gray. The outrageous Lady Bracknell is a highlight of the evening and any evening about Wilde would be incomplete without considering his calamitous two years in Reading Prison, which was saved by hilarious chats between Wilde and his Irish warder, Tom Martin. Also waiting in the wings is Noel Coward, who plans to chat about his thoroughly eventful and comical journey out to Cape Town.

Gilchrist plays some 7 different characters in the show, including the iconic Lady Bracknell. He says, "I so enjoy the sharp and witty insights that Wilde gives into the, at times, hilariously idiotic snobbery of the English upper classes of his time." As well as the humor, Gilchrist also brings to the stage the sadness associated with Wilde's later decline and imprisonment.

OSCAR & NOEL ENCORE plays from 29-30 December at 7pm, with tickets costing R80-R90. Bookings are open online at the Alexander Bar website or at the bar itself. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the bar (which is situated on 76 Strand Street in Cape Town) anytime during regular opening hours, on Mondays - Saturdays from 11am to 1am. For telephone bookings and enquiries, call 021 300 1652.
