Nicholas Pauling and Brent Palmer in A STEADY RAIN

Keith Huff's police drama, A STEADY RAIN, will be performed at the Alexabder Bar's Upstairs Theatre in a production directed by Adrian Collins (HAMLET, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY) and starring Brent Palmer (BENCH) and Nick Pauling (BLUE/ORANGE, THE PERVERT LAURA, DEATH OF A COLONIALIST). The 90-minute drama opened on Broadway in September 2009, following readings in New York City and Los Angeles and a 2007 Chicago Dramatists staging in 2007.

A STEADY RAIN takes the audience on a gripping and relentless journey, using razor-sharp storytelling to combine the perspectives of two Chicago police officers, Joey and Denny, into one harrowing story. Long time partners and best friends, Joey and Denny have serious problems. Joey struggles with alcohol while he secretly obsesses over Denny's wife. Denny is resentful, aggressive and racist cheater. A gritty and rich "noir" tale of two Chicago police officers whose inner need to serve and protect both consumes them and rips them apart.

The original Broadway production of A STEADY RAIN starred Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig and played a limited engagement of 21 previews and 80 performances, all of which sold out. With positive reviews from Variety, USA Today and Backstage, the highly anticipated play drew mixed notices from The New York Times and the LA Times and received no recognition at that season's Tony Awards. Nonetheless, the production twice attracted prominent headlines, once when the two celebrities used their star power to raise more than $20 000 for AIDS research via the Broadway Cares charity at the end of one of their performances and again when Jackman stopped the show to call out an audience member whose cell phone interrupted a performance of the play, as seen in the video clip below.

A STEADY RAIN runs from 10-21 November at the Alexander Bar's Upstairs Theatre at 7pm nightly. Tickets cost R90-R100 and can be booked online at the Alexander Bar website or purchased at the bar.
