Fortieth Anniversary Celebration of ABIGAIL'S PARTY Set as a Masque Theatre Fundraiser

The upcoming July run of Mike Leigh's ABIGAIL'S PARTY at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg will serve as a unique fundraiser for the popular Capetonian community theatre. The evening promises to be an evening of interactive fun, where the audience is encouraged to don their favourite 1970s outfit.

Set in that decade, ABIGAIL'S PARTY is a brilliantly funny, satirical look at the society of the time. Set at an intimate party put on by a couple aspiring to be part of the new middle class emerging at the time, the play explores a theme that Leigh often explored through his work - 'the done thing,' in which his characters and situations reflect what society expected of them at the time and place in which he set the action of the play. The evening starts off looking just right, with the latest style in fashion, drinks, food and music all on display. However, it quickly descends into an uncomfortable show of bad taste and bad manners, ending in an unforgettable climax.

The cast of ABIGAIL'S PARTY is led by Candice Burgess (TOP GIRLS) and Mark Wilkes (DESIGN FOR LIVING) as the hosts of the party. Directed by Lynn Moss (A DAY IN THE DEATH OF JOE EGG, ONE FOR THE ROAD), the production is sure to be a laugh a minute ride.

This special celebration of the fortieth anniversary of this classic play is a Masque Theatre fundraiser. Audience members are encouraged to dress up and come early because the party starts in the foyer about 45 minutes before the curtain goes up in the auditorium. "Abigail" partygoers will welcome everyone with a complimentary drink, snacks, souvenir programme and a special gift. At interval, the audience can take part in the raffle and finally enjoy a little top up at the cash bar with the cast after the show.

ABIGAIL'S PARTY will run for only five performances from 12 - 15 July. Evening parties begin at 19:15 with the curtain going up at 20:00, with the matinee party on 15 July starting at 13:00 before a 14:00 curtain. Tickets are R150 for evenings and R80 for the matinee, with bookings now open through Computicket or on the Masque website. Alternatively, patrons may call the Masque Theatre on 021 788 1898 or contact the theatre by email.
