Cape Town City Ballet's bumper festive season of ballet kicks off this week, offering audiences a special peek behind scenes of their new ballet on 6 December at 18h00 with Insight into The Tin Soldier in the Artscape Opera House. This is followed by the world premiere of The Tin Soldier on 11 December and the opening nights of Belles & Beaux on 18 December and Night & Day on 31 December. This is the first time that a ballet company in South Africa offers a season of 3 ballets in one month!

The Tin Soldier, choreographed by Cape Town City Ballet's artistic director Robin van Wyk, guarantees perfect family entertainment during the upcoming festive season. It tells the tale of a little boy who receives a set of tin soldiers for Christmas, but one of the soldiers has a broken leg. At midnight the toys come to life and the Tin Soldier falls in love with a beautiful Ballerina, who lives in a glass castle. The evil Jack-in-the-Box kicks the Tin Soldier out of the toy room and he goes on a wonderful adventure where he meets cats, water-babies, fishermen and a flirtatious cook. The Tin Soldier is eventually returned to the little boy, who takes him to the toymaker to repair him. The Toymaker shows the little boy a magical place within the toyshop, where everything comes to life.

The Tin Soldier is performed to the exquisite music of the celebrated Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, arranged for symphony orchestra by Allan Stephenson, who will also conduct the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at selected performances.

The role of the tin soldier will be danced by Thomas Thorne, Daniel Szybkowski, Jesse Milligan and Ivan Boonzaaier, while Laura Bosenberg, Angela Hansford, Kirstel Jensen and Elizabeth Nienaber can be seen in the part of the paper ballerina.

Presented at the Artscape Theatre Complex in Cape Town, this delightful new ballet forms part of Cape Town City Ballet's annual festive season productions, which will also include Belles and Beaux from 18 to 22 December, and Night & Day which will open on New Year's Eve 31 December and run until 11 Jan 2014.

Belles & Beaux offers a programme of ballet treats for all dance lovers and will show off Cape Town City Ballet's ballerinas and danseurs in a selection from delightful ballets in different styles. Night & Day, a tribute to the life and music of Cole Porter, is an exhilarating work with toe-tapping numbers including elements of jazz, tap dancing and cabaret.

Bookings for all productions are at Computicket or Artscape-Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695. Special discount packages available for groups of 10 or when booking for more than one of the three productions.
