Over the past hundred years the theater community has celebrated some of the most notable events in Broadway's history at the Friars Club. Last night the Barrington Stage Co. the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, Ma. under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd held their New York City Benefit in the legendary building where so many legends of the theater community have socialized and entertained each other. John Rando the famed director was celebrated for his extraordinary talent and his contributions to BSC. John has directed two of the most popular musicals in BSC history, The Pirates of Penzance and On the Town, which transferred to Broadway and received four Tony Award nominations, including Best Director. At BSC John also directed The Royal Family of Broadway and Guys and Dolls and on Broadway, he won a Tony Award for his direction of Urinetown, The Musical.
Kate Baldwin and Conor Ryan, the stars of the Keen Company production of John & Jen, the musical with music by Andrew Lippa, lyrics byTom Greenwald, and a book by Greenwald and Lippa, just headed to the recording studio to preserve the 2015 Off-Broadway Cast Recording for Broadway Records. A June 16th release is planned. Andrew Lippa and Michael Croiter will produce the album. Musical Director is Lily Lang. This recording will include the premiere of the new song, 'Trouble with Men,' as well as new orchestrations and two songs from the score never before recorded. The Drama Desk and Obie Award-winning Keen Company presents the first New York revival of John & Jen, the musical with music by Andrew Lippa, lyrics by Tom Greenwald, and a book by Greenwald and Lippa. The show officially opened last night, February 26th at The Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues). This production will star Kate Baldwin (Big Fish, Finian's Rainbow) and Conor Ryan (Cinderella, The Fortress of Solitude) in the title roles. Vladimir Jurowski leads a rare revival of Richard Strauss's epic Die Frau ohne Schattenbeginning November 7, in the acclaimed staging by the late Herbert Wernicke that had its Met premiere in 2001. Anne Schwanewilms, one of the world's leading Strauss sopranos, makes her Met debut as the Empress. Christine Goerke, a graduate of the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program who has recently emerged as a prominent international dramatic soprano, returns to the company after an absence of several seasons to sing the role of the Dyer's Wife. The cast also includes Torsten Kerl as the Emperor, Johan Reuter as Barak, and Ildikó Komlósi as the Nurse. On November 16, American soprano Meagan Miller will make her Met debut as the Empress. The Astoria Performing Arts Center has announced Willy Russell's (Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine) BLOOD BROTHERS, musical staging by Christine O'Grady, musical direction by Julianne B. Merrill, and directed by Tom Wojtunik. BLOOD BROTHERS will play a limited engagement at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church (30-44 Crescent St, Astoria, NY 11102. Entrance on 30th Road.) Performances begin tonight, May 2 and continue through Saturday, May 18. Opening Night is Saturday, May 4 (8 p.m.). BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!
On December 11th, composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa was joined on stage by Julia Murney, Ana Gasteyer, Megan McGinnis and Carly Jibson for an evening of song including new tunes from 'Asphalt Beach' at the Metropolitan Room.
On November 7th, Primary Stages held its 21st Anniversary Gala honoring Tony Award-winning Choreographer and Director, Susan Stroman at Tavern On The Green. On hand for the festivities were Nathan Lane, Charles Grodin, Karen Ziemba, Boyd Gaines and many more.
