Disney's Aladdin, the new musical comedy based on the Academy Award-winning animated film, opened to critical acclaim on March 20th, 2014 at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre and has received 2014 Best Musical nominations from the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards. NEW DRAMATISTS, Tony Honor recipient and the nation's premiere playwright development workshop, just honored five-time Tony Award winning director/choreographer Susan Stroman with their 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award at its 65th Annual Spring Luncheon tribute. Among the Stroman collaborators offering tributes was Theatre World Award winning actor Jason Danieley (Next to Normal, Curtains, The Full Monty, Candide) and New York City Ballet's Tiler Peck performing a selection from Little Dancer, Taylor Mac performing a selection from The Last Two People on Earth, Tony nominee Marin Mazzie performing from Bullets Over Broadway; and Contact collaborator John Weidman, Karen Ziemba performing a selection from Crazy For You, and cast members from The Scottsboro Boys: John Cullum, Brandon Victor Dixon, Shavey Brown, Max Kumangai, James T. Lane, Deandre Leatherbury, J.C. Montgomery, Justin Prescott, Clinton Roane, and David Bazemore. The event co-chairs are Letty Aronson, Roy Furman, and Julian Schlossberg. (more...)

In recognition of the 20 year anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, actor/writer Jay O. Sanders' play Unexplored Interior, directed by James Glossman, received an unprecedented presentation on Sunday, May 11 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage (www.mjhnyc.org). This first of its kind, technological and creative partnership with Google+, allowed the play to be seen in NYC and at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center (www.kigaligenocidememorial.org) in Rwanda. On Sunday, May 18th, 15 high school students from the Quest To Learn school in New York City gathered at The Producers Club in the Theatre District, where they met members of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals: Jason Hellerstein, a junior majoring in Literature and President of the company for the upcoming year; Josh Friedman, a sophomore majoring in Psychology and the Producer of HPT167; Ally Covello, a sophomore majoring in neurobiology and member of the Hasty Pudding band (saxophone, clarinet, and flute); and Paris Ellsworth, a junior majoring in Psychology and cast member, who played Albanian psychic Macy Deadpeople in the Pudding's latest production, Victorian Secrets. They were soon joined by David Binder, the Producer of Hedwig and The Angry Inch on Broadway;associate producer Mark Berger, make-up artist and wig master Mike Potter, Barbara Crompton, Hedwig's company manager, and Sarah Marcus from Serino Coyne, the advertising agency for Hedwig. Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winner Whoopi Goldberg attended last night's performance of Broadway's new smash musical comedy Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Following the performance, Goldberg went backstage to visit with Tony nominee James Monroe Iglehart (Genie), who was near tears at meeting one of his idols, and the cast. The cast of the new Broadway smash, Disney's Aladdin, was recently in the studio laying down tracks for the Original Cast Recording of the show, to be released by Walt Disney Records digitally on Tuesday, May 27th. The physical album is set for release on Tuesday, June 17th and will also be available for purchase in-theater. The Aladdin Original Broadway Cast Recording will be produced by Alan Menken, Michael Kosarin,Frank Filipetti and Chris Montan and executive produced by Kurt Deutsch.
