Since the recent discovery of the remains of the real Richard III, both the real life monarch and Shakespeare's monstrous version of him have been much talked about - his arch-villain of all villains - the intense, discontented, crippled, larger than life "protagonist," Richard, Duke of Gloucester dominates this seething history from start to finish. KING CHARLES III closed on Broadway earlier this year. And though it won an Olivier Award, I suspect this regional premiere will be a rare opportunity to see this show -- or at least a quality production of it. Done right, as it is by Playhouse on the Square, it's an absorbing and memorable evening of theatre. Anything less could spell disaster because bringing this plausible alternate world to life is quite a feat. (more...)

William Shakespeare's Richard III will be performed by the renowned five-member British touring group, Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) October 12, 13, and 14 at Notre Dame's Washington Hall. Founded by Homer "Murph" Swander, Sir Patrick Stewart, and members of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1975, AFTLS has been visiting university campuses for week-long residencies ever since. "There are two details that make this tour special," says Scott Jackson, executive director of Shakespeare at Notre Dame, AFTLS's American home. "This is the first time that AFTLS has adapted a history and utilized gender-fluid casting." (more...)

This summer INDEPENDENT SHAKESPEARE CO. presents an imaginative production of Shakespeare's final play, THE TEMPEST, featuring Thom Rivera as Prospero and directed by Matthew Earnest.  THE TEMPEST will begin previews at THE GRIFFITH PARK FREE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL on Saturday, July 30 at 7pm and will open on Saturday, August 6 at 7:00pm and perform through Sunday, September 4 at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park.  All ISC Summer Shakespeare productions are FREE to the public!  THE TEMPEST is the second of two productions being presented at this year's GRIFFITH PARK FREE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL. As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Javier Muñoz - Lin-Manuel Miranda's alternate in the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton on Broadway and the actor who portrayed AlexanderHamilton when President Barack Obama saw Hamilton last July - will step into the title role starting July 11 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (226 W. 46 St.), it has been announced byHamilton producer Jeffrey Seller.
