by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Apr 27, 2015

Portland Stage closes its season with the world premiere of award-winning Maine novelist, Monica Wood's touching first play, Papermaker. Set during the papermill strike of 1989 in the fictional town of Abbott Falls, Maine, the work probes the perceptions, conflicts, and interactions of individuals on both sides of the painful controversy. Colorful buildings cascade down the walls of the Evjue Stage at the Bartell Theatre. When the lights are dim they appear to slowly fade into the darkness. It is only when the lights are fully illuminating the playing space that the images are melting into nothingness. Backgrounds become distorted until the lights dim once more. It is the darkness that creates a safe, familiar space in the world of the Loman family. (more...)
