BroadwayWorld was saddened to report that Broadway veteran Merwin Foard recently passed away at 59 years old. Born September 16, 1960 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Foard was last seen on Broadway in Aladdin as a standby for Jafar/Sultan.

Over the Tavern opened to a full house Sunday at Theatre at the Center in Munster. The play by Tom Dudzick is directed by Ericka Mac with Janet Ulrich Brooks as Sister Clarissa, Logan Baffico as Rudy, Cory Goodrich as Ellen, Isabelle Roberts as Annie, Eric Slater as Chet, Julian Solis as Georgie and Seth Steinberg as Eddie. Over the Tavern offers a hilarious look at family life in the 1950s.  Over the Tavern continues its run through August 11.

Just last night, the Signature Theatre held its Annual Gala at The Pershing Square Signature Center. The event honored Citi CEO Michael Corbat and celebrated the millionth subsidized ticket offered under the groundbreaking Signature Ticket Initiative.

Following the success of last season's production of Peter Eotvos's Angels in America, New York City Opera presents Charles Wuorinen's Brokeback Mountain as the second installment in its annual LGBT Pride Series. Annie Proulx, author of the original short story that also inspired the 2005 blockbuster film, created the opera's libretto. Jacopo Spirei directs the production which premiered in 2016 at Salzburger Landestheater. Conductor Kazem Abdullah leads the New York City Opera Orchestra. The production marks the American premiere of the opera which was commissioned by City Opera in 2008. Four performances of Brokeback Mountain will be presented at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center on May 31 and June 4 at 7:30 p.m., June 2 at 2:00 p.m., and June 3 at 4:00 p.m.

The Pazinski family returns to Circle's stage in King O' the Moon by Tom Dudzick, the second play in a trilogy inspired by the author's childhood. Circle produced Dudzick's Over the Tavern in 2005 and The Last Mass at St. Casimir's in 2007.  Ten years after Over the Tavern, this sequel takes place during the rebellious '60's as Apollo 11 is on its voyage to the moon. The Pazinski's come together as their lives seem to fall apart. Prior knowledge of this working-class family is not a prerequisite to appreciate the hilarious and heartfelt end to the three part series at Circle.

Gerard Mortier and the New York City Opera have commissioned Charles Wuorinen, an American composer, to turn Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain into a work for the operatic stage. Proulx wrote the libretto, and Wuorinen completed the opera in 2012. The premiere was postponed after New York City Opera's General Director, Gerard Mortier, resigned. The project was then again taken up by Mortier at the Teatro Real in Madrid and is set to premiere today, January 28, 2014.

Rehearsals have begun for "Seminar," the sexy, smart new comedy starring Jeff Goldblum, an Academy Award and Emmy Award-nominee. "Seminar," by Pulitzer Prize finalist and "Smash" creator Theresa Rebeck and directed by Obie Award-winner Sam Gold, begins previews October 10 and opens October 17, 2012, at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre. The first production of the Ahmanson Theatre's 2012-2013 season, "Seminar" will continue performances through November 18, 2012. Check out photos of the cast at rehearsal below!

Earlier today, Nick Jonas - the popular singer/songwriter who was most recently seen in the Tony-nominated How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying - served as master of ceremonies as hundreds of students from middle and intermediate New York City Public Schools in Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Manhattan made their Broadway debut on stage at the Shubert Theatre, the culminating event of the 7th annual Shubert Foundation/MTI Broadway JR. Student Program. The students performed a song from their school's production of a student version of a Broadway musical, including Annie JR., Once on this Island JR., Disney's Aladdin JR., Guys and Dolls JR., Bugsy Malone JR., Meredith Willson's The Music Man JR., Dear Edwina JR., Fame JR., Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka JR., and Thoroughly Modern Millie JR. Broadway star Tom Wopat is enjoying the Florida sunshine this week as he takes to the stage at the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach. Returning to the Royal Room for the first time since 2007, Tom Wopat first came to public attention in the late-1970s as the freewheeling Luke Duke on the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard. In 1977, he made his Broadway debut in Cy Coleman's I Love My Wife. Wopat went on to perform in the Tony Award-winning City of Angels and Guys and Dolls. He received a Tony nomination for creating the role of Frank Butler in the Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun, opposite Bernadette Peters. In 2008, Wopat returned to Broadway as Tom Hurley in A Catered Affair with Faith Prince and Harvey Fierstein. 2011 saw him again on Broadway starring as Frank Abagnale Sr. in the new adaptation of Catch Me If You Can.

Signature Theatre Company announced yesterday seven productions for its inaugural 2012 season at Signature Center, the company's new Frank Gehry-designed permanent home opening in February 2012. Signature Center will allow the Company to expand its programming, introduce new initiatives, and build audiences. Featuring three intimate theatres, a Studio Theatre, rehearsal studio and a shared lobby with café and bookstore, Signature Center will be both a theatre community hub and a neighborhood destination.

From April 22-30, the Independent Drama Society completes its 2010-2011 season, a season of love and loathing, with EURYDICE by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Artistic Director Lindsay Eagle (The Shape of Things).

Drury Lane Theatre presents the regional premiere of the smash hit Tony Award-winning Best Musical, SPAMALOT, directed by William Osetek, Artistic Director at Drury Lane Theatre, the new production lovingly 'ripped off' from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Drury Lane Theatre has been awarded the exclusive Midwest rights from the owners of SPAMALOT to present a regional production of the Broadway sensation. The award-winning York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director) hosted its 19th Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre on Monday, November 22, 2010, honoring Tony Award-winning librettist Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray, Elf). The evening was directed by Tony-winning director/lyricist/librettist Richard Maltby and the award was presented by Alice Hammerstein Mathias, daughter of Oscar Hammerstein II.

Yesterday evening, May 10, the Algonquin Hotel hosted the 75th Annual New York Drama Critics' Circle Award ceremony honoring the best of the 2009-2010 theatre season. This year's honorees included casts and creative teams of The Orphans' Home Cycle, Fences, Circle Mirror Transformation, The Aliens; Viola Davis, Annie Baker, and Hallie Foote. Presenters included Denzel Washington, who presented the Award for Sustained Achievement to his Fence's co-star Viola Davis, Tony Kushner and Marian Seldes.

Tony Winner Dan Fogler premiered his directing debut at the Tribeca Film Festival last week. The movie, Hysterical Psycho, is a spoof of cabin in the woods movies, made with his theater group, Stage 13.

'Minsky's' opens February 6, 2009, at Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre and continues through March 1 (previews began January 21). Featuring music by three-time Tony Award-winning composer Charles Strouse ('Bye Bye Birdie,' 'Annie,' 'Applause') and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead ('Jelly's Last Jam' and 'Triumph of Love'), 'Minsky's' is Center Theatre Group's second collaboration with Tony Award-winning writer Bob Martin and director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw ('The Drowsy Chaperone')
