Seeing great artists perform in great venues with great friends is my usual activity. Sunday afternoon was no different. The venue, Yankee Stadium. The artists, The New York Yankees. The friends. Haley Swindal (actor, singer, and granddaughter of George Steinbrenner, the man that built the place). Steve Tyrell (handsome singer extraordinaire, fresh from his recently completed sold out Carlyle engagement). Jamie deRoy, supreme friend, Broadway Producer/entertainer (taking time out from counting all the nominations her shows have gathered). And of course, best friend for 44 years Eda Sorokoff. Founded in 1914 to represent the White House press corps, the association marks its centennial this year. It works to maintain independent news media coverage of the president, advocating for access, handling logistics for pools of reporters who stay close to the president and those who travel with him, and providing scholarships to journalism students. Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) plays Berenger in Eugene Ionesco's The Killer in a production that also features Kristine Nielsen, Paul Sparks and Robert Stanton. The Killer is newly translated by Michael Feingold and is directed by Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder). Last produced Off-Broadway in 1960, The Killer is the final production of Theatre for a New Audience's inaugural season at Polonsky Shakespeare Center, 262 Ashland Place. Previews begin Saturday, May 17, at 7:30pm for an opening Thursday, May 29, and a scheduled run through Sunday, June 29. ARLINGTON stars Alexandra Silber(MASTER CLASS on Broadway with Tyne Daly, THE WOMAN IN WHITE) as Sara Jane, a young wife who valiantly tries to remain hopeful while her husband is away at war, despite a growing concern that something is not quite right. This new music-theatre piece is a stirring and powerful work that explores complex questions about history, identity and power as it takes us deeper into the storm stirring beneath Sara Jan's Sunny exterior. What would become the Long Beach Polar Bears started innocently enough on Super Bowl Sunday in 1998. Two guys – Kevin McCarthy and Pete Meyers – decided it would be fun to jump into the Atlantic Ocean for a quick dip before the game. Stories flew around town about how much Kevin and Pete enjoyed their swim. (At least that's what they said!) Mike Bradley asked Kevin and Pete if they would like company on Super Bowl Sunday in 1999. They readily agreed, and Mike brought along his brother P.J. Bradley to join in the swim. (more...)

This weekend, New Yorkers brought their Christmas trees to over 80 locations across the city for the 18th annual MulchFest. NYC Parks, partnering with the Department of Sanitation, GreeNYC, and numerous community organizations, provides New Yorkers with the opportunity to mulch their Christmas trees into wood chips that will be used to nourish parks and gardens throughout the city.
