Just last week, On the Town returned to Broadway in a revival directed by John Rando, which is running at the Lyric Theatre. Before Alysha Umphress and Jay Armstrong Johnson took on the iconic roles of Hildy and Chip, Lea DeLaria and Jesse Tyler Ferguson played them in the 1998 Broadway revival. ELMER GANTRY is a musical version of Sinclair Lewis' best-selling novel, directed by Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer (Broadway's Follies, Million Dollar Quartet). Schaeffer collaborated on the last production of Elmer Gantry at Marriott's Lincolnshire Theatre in Chicago with authors John Bishop (book), Mel Marvin (music) and Bob Satuloff (lyrics) in 1998; the show has not been produced since then. Signature Theatre's presentation will be the 5th production in the show's history. Running in the MAX Theatre now through November 9, Signature's production includes several brand new songs by Mel Marvin and Bob Satuloff and a reimagined script that John Bishop worked on until his death in 2006. Doris Eaton Travis, the one-time Ziegfeld Follies star (and last surviving Ziegfeld girl), who was still kicking at the age of 106 at this year's Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS Easter Bonnnet competition on April 26-27, has passed away this morning. Here's a look at her in this year's 'Gaga for Broadway' opening number from The 24th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition (April 2010) featuring a giant bonnet designed by Project Runway finalist Chris March, 50 Broadway singers and dancers and the 106 year old former Ziegfeld Follies girl. The Easter Bonnet Competition is Broadways annual spring event, a celebration of song, dance, sketches and highly architectural headgear benefiting Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS.
