Award-winning non-for-profit Broadway Sings for Pride (www.BroadwaySingsForPride.com) held their 6th annual PRIDE benefit concert on Monday, June 20, 2016. Two years ago, on September 15, 2011, Newsies, the hit Tony Award-winning 'critics' pick,' played its first performance at Paper Mill Playhouse. Ever since that very first night, Newsies fans, self-proclaimed 'fansies,' have been a cause for celebration, helping to propel the show from a limited regional theatre run to a limited Broadway engagement and then to extend into a record-breaking open-ended run. In honor of those dedicated fans, the show will celebrate 'NewsiesFan Week' September 15 - 21. Check out the cast's announcement video below!
Happy Birthday Jeremy Jordan! This year, Jordan was nominated for a Tony Award for his role as Jack Kelly in NEWSIES, which he began with Paper Mill Playhouse's U.S. touring production in 2011. Jordan has also appeared in Broadway's Bonnie & Clyde in 2011, as well as Rock of Ages and West Side Story in 2009. He guest-starred on Law & Order: SVU in 2008 and appeared in the film Joyful Noise. He will soon appear on the upcoming second season of NBC's SMASH.
Paper Mill Playhouse, a professional, regional theater in Millburn, NJ, put together the following video, which shows highlights from its 2011-2012 season of 'firsts.' Paper Mill produced the world premiere of Disney's Newsies, which transferred to Broadway, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Boeing-Boeing, Damn Yankees and Once On This Island, which featured an all-star cast. Happy Birthday, Harvey Fierstein! In addition to Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles and A Catered Affair, Fierstein's Broadway acting credits include playing the mother, Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (2002), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. He later replaced Alfred Molina as Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Fierstein returned to the theatre when he toured as Tevye, replacing Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof starting in December 2009. On February 15, 2011, he replaced Douglas Hodge as Albin/Zaza in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles playing opposite Christopher Sieber. He is nominated for a 2012 Tony Award for the book of Newsies.
