In the world of jukebox musicals, the best way to ensure something entertaining and enjoyable is to either use the music in an organic way, often telling the story of the artist themselves or to go the opposite route and create something over the top with a loose narrative, allowing the audience to focus primarily on the music they love and the performances on stage.

The story of Romeo and Juliet is so profound, the idea of star-cross’d lovers has become synonymous with the meaning of romantic love. On Sept. 8, for a limited 2-weekend run, The Conejo Players Artist Theatre brings you the world premiere of an original adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. 

In Matthew Bourne’s dystopian take on the classic love story, there are leaps aplenty - and not just in the physical sense.

This March, Sarasota Orchestra's Pops and Great Escapes series feature many different flavors of American music, from swing to hip hop and from Dvořák's “New World” to Copland's “Simple Gifts.”

Acclaimed soloist Vladimir Khomyakov, who has performed with orchestras worldwide, joins the West Valley Symphony for its 2021-2022 season-opening performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21 at The Vista Center for the Arts, 15660 N. Parkway Place in Surprise.

The Axelrod Performing Arts Center has joined The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey to celebrate the work of William Shakespeare, just in time for his 457th birthday. “The Bard at Bell Works” takes place on the Bell Works campus in Holmdel, NJ.

On Friday, April 2, 2021, Steinway & Sons releases SIMPLE MUSIC, a complete recording of the rarely heard book of 33 miniatures from music for stage and screen by Georgia's legendary composer Giya Kancheli, performed and reimagined by two intrepid masters of their instruments: pianist Jenny Lin and accordion virtuoso Guy Klucevsek. 

The State Ballet of Georgia will premiere a new dance film created specifically for Northrop audiences on Sat, Mar 20.

On October 11, Chicago Phil Chamber returns for its second outdoor, socially-distanced concert of the season, Chicago Phil Brass, in the parking lot of the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie .

Center Theatre Group has announced the immediate launch of their newest venue, the Digital Stage, currently housing its ever-expanding library of education, community outreach and Art Goes On videos. The rivalry between the two families will cost Mercutio's life, causing Romeo a desire of vengeance for the loss of his friend. The star-crossed lovers' tragic fate inspired Prokofiev's remarkable cinematic score, from the delicate theme of Juliet to the ominous Dance of the Knights. The Bolshoi Ballet's production of Romeo and Juliet stars Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov who wholly embody the two eternal lovers in Alexei Ratmansky's stunning evocation of love at first sight. The production will be directed by Shannon Eubanks and run October 24th through November 10th, 2019, at the company's home in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center.

San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) is presented by The Royal Danish Ballet at The Royal Danish Opera House in Copenhagen, Denmark, October 30-November 2, 2019, with four performances of Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson's Romeo & Juliet, set to Sergei Prokofiev's lush and evocative score of the same name. The tour marks the Company's first appearance at The Royal Danish Opera House, which was designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen and publicly inaugurated in 2005.

Building on a heritage of commissioning groundbreaking dance from today's top choreographers, uncovering new choreographic talent, staging modern classics, and preserving the works that make up the canon of classic ballet, the 2020 Season places SF Ballet at the forefront of innovation and preeminence. Highlights include two new SF Ballet commissions by Cathy Marston and Trey McIntyre, and a co-commission with American Ballet Theatre of a work by Alexei Ratmansky; as well as works by George Balanchine, David Dawson, Harald Lander, Edwaard Liang, Benjamin Millepied, Mark Morris, Liam Scarlett, Helgi Tomasson, and Stanton Welch. The Season's three story ballets include Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Wheeldon's Cinderella, and Tomasson's Romeo & Juliet.

The little OPERA theatre of ny(LOTNY) presents the New York Premiere of Benjamin Britten's opera in two acts, OWEN WINGRAVE, with libretto by Myfanwy Piper, at GK Arts Center, 29 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY, from May 9-12, 2019, with performances Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. 2018 was an amazing year for theatre in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and if the proposed seasons for area theatres are any indication, 2019 is going to be a great one, too. From classic plays to super contemporary ones, and of course, a decent amount of musicals, this year has a lot for theatregoers to look forward to. Here are some productions I'm particularly excited about in the coming months.
