BWW Reviews: CAROLE J. BUFFORD Raises Her Cabaret Performance Bar To Star Level With 'Shades of Blue' at the Metropolitan Room
by Stephen Hanks - May 21, 2014

I never thought that writing a rave review would be more difficult than constructing a less than positive critique, but Carole J. Bufford, damn her, is causing me creative problems. That's because for the third time in three years I'm compelled to praise this attractive powerhouse cabaret singer to the skies (you can find my two previous essays on her unassailable talent here and here) and my author's arsenal contains only so many superlatives. With yet another outstanding performance last Thursday night at the Metropolitan Room, the young woman who was named's 2013 Cabaret Vocalist of the Year has snatched my mental thesaurus (not to mention my online one) and trampled all over it. She's given me the Writer's Block blues. (more...)

Louise Heck-Rabi Playwriting Festival Presents Winners' Plays at Studio Theatre in Midtown
by BWW News Desk - Mar 7, 2016

Modern day playwrights face more than the occasional Writer's Block, they face pretty tough odds of achieving the gratification that comes with having their work produced. As composed by Gwydion Suilebhan, a Washington D.C. playwright and representative to the Dramatists Guild, there are an estimated 10,000 playwrights in the United States writing an average of one new play per year. Of the plays written, an estimated maximum of 10% will actually premiere on stage. This leaves more than 90% of plays per year that will never know the warmth of the spotlight. When three students from Wayne State University's Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance were crowned as the winners of the 2016 Louise Heck-Rabi Dramatic Writing Festival they beat those odds. In addition to cash prizes, each recipient received the chance to have their award-winning script produced on stage at Midtown Detroit's Studio Theatre.   (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented Cast Makes Difficult NINE Compelling Theatre
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 26, 2015

A musical with Italian opera-inspired songs about a philandering middle-aged film director with Writer's Block, and the dozens of women that influence his life and work, does not seem like an obvious choice for a college theatre program to undertake. However, under the direction of Earl D. Weaver (who also choreographed), Theatre UCF sinks its collective teeth into the neurotic, misogynistic, and childish mind of Guido Contini in NINE, running through March 29th. This seven-time Tony-winning musical is based on the semi-autobiographical film '8½' by Italian director Federico Fellini. The cast of 21 women, one man, and four boys creates an evocative world that seems to hover in the realm between fantasy and reality; much like many of Fellini's films. With striking talent, breath-taking design, and artistic vision, Theatre UCF succeeds where many professional companies would (and have) faltered; despite its unsettling premise, NINE is a joyful reminder of the power of young talent in the arts. Just as central character J. M. Barrie needs to find his true voice in order to break through the Writer's Block that is hampering his playwriting career, FINDING NEVERLAND, the new musical about the family that inspired the beleaguered author to create Peter Pan, needs to find its voice, too. Teetering abruptly between empty frivolousness and genuine pathos, FINDING NEVERLAND is an uneven adventure in its current pre-Broadway tryout at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. With his last play a failure, James Barrie is crippled by Writer's Block and success seems like a far-away land.
