by Remy Block - Feb 24, 2015

Veteran cabaret performer Raissa Katona Bennett and Musical Director Kenneth Gartman are very good friends who for the past few years have been performing together in what might be called the cabaret equivalent of movie shorts. But with 3Decades in the Dark: Raissa and Kenneth Go to the Movies (a five-show run that ended Feb. 21 at the Laurie Beechman Theater), Bennett and Gartman have finally presented their first feature length duo cabaret show. Both performers have garnered praise as individual performers in musical theater and cabaret. Bennett, who is the charming producer and host of the Award-winning Concerts for City Greens at Tudor City, once played Christine in Phantom of the Opera, and has performed solo shows at venues such as the old Feinstein's. Gartman, who recently musically directed The White City in concert at 54 Below, presented a highly praised solo show in 2011. Sounds like a match made in cabaret heaven, right? (more...)

Randy Jernigan Reissues Love Stories Book and Ventures Into New Territory with ScreenplayRandy Jernigan Reissues Love Stories Book and Ventures Into New Territory with Screenplay
by BWW News Desk - Feb 21, 2015

'Losing to Win' author Randy Jernigan has signed to reissue his first book of love stories and is in negotiations with a major film company who has made an offer for his screenplay, 'Willing to Love.' The screenplay is an adaptation of a short story Jernigan published in an American magazine in 2007 and was recently fleshed out into a film treatment for Jernigan's agency to shop around. 'It didn't take long before we had a few production houses asking about the piece,' said Jernigan's agency rep Joel Lockwood. 'It was a popular story for the magazine and I'm confident it will be a money-maker for the film company. I have no doubt.' Lockwood is staying mum as to who they are negotiating with, as well as other details, but does add that two names have been attached to the project. A director and actor who both helped sell the project to the studio and will come with the package. Meanwhile, the busy writer is spreading his creative Wings. According to Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) Jernigan will take on a supporting role of Jesse Henshall in the new ICE Production Partners comedy, 'The Plot Thickens' later this year. Jernigan was also in the lead role in a slasher short that recently won 2nd place in a new San Diego film festival. "This Thing Called Love" will be reissued later this year through Creative Partners Books. (more...)

BWW Review: SLAVA'S SNOWSHOW Is a Mess; on Stage and Off at the Dr. Phillips CenterBWW Review: SLAVA'S SNOWSHOW Is a Mess; on Stage and Off at the Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 21, 2015

Let me start this review by saying that I generally like everything that I see; at least to a certain degree. I can usually find some redeeming artistic moment of any production to tide me over when the work as a whole isn't up to par. However in SLAVA'S SNOWSHOW, running through March 1st at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, I found almost no redeeming moments; nearly nothing on which to hang even the slightest artistic appreciation. This "show" involves a collection of eight clownish-type individuals who walk around the stage for an hour and 45 minutes (including a 15 minute intermission) and do little more than make a mess. In a word, this show is nonsense; and not fun, clownish nonsense, just plan "this makes no sense" nonsense. (more...)

by Sondra Forsyth - Feb 20, 2015

'Blood on the Veil' is a mesmerizing theater piece with the commendable mission of dispelling the misconception that the ancient oriental art of belly dancing is nothing but a dance of seduction. Written, choreographed, and performed by the multi-talented Carol Henning, the performance involves not only dancing but also her passionately delivered monologues laced with humor about her journey from illness to health. Fittingly, Henning's stage name is 'Tandava', which is Sanskrit for the Hindu deity Shiva's dance of destruction and rebirth. (more...)

by Sondra Forsyth - Feb 18, 2015

I've never been a fan of Peter Martins' choreography so I was surprised to find myself moved by the "balcony pas de deux" in Romeo + Juliet, his adaptation for the New York City Ballet of Shakespeare's tragic tale about star-crossed lovers. Sterling Hyltin as Juliet and Robert Fairchild as Romeo, returning to the roles they originated when the ballet had its premiere in 2007, used the beautiful but difficult intertwinings and lifts to convey their youthful passion in a way that was entirely believable to me.
