Boston Lyric Opera's (BLO) production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's classic The Marriage of Figaro, opens April 28 for a five-performance run through May 7 at the John Hancock Hall at the Back Bay Events Center. Reuniting the artistic team that helmed BLO's acclaimed 2016 La Bohème (Rosetta Cucchi directing, BLO Artistic Advisor John Conklin designing, and David Angusconducting) the production recounts the antics and schemes of Count Almaviva as he attempts to upend Figaro's wedding day.  Cucchi and Conklin took inspiration for this new production from the style and feel of the romantic Billy Wilder 1954 comedy “Sabrina” starring Audrey Hepburn; it takes place in an imagined glamorous villa located in a prototypical European city. Photo Flash: Theatreworks Silicon Valley presents Musical RAGS
by BWW News Desk - Apr 5, 2017

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 2016/2017 season with a musical saga of immigrant America, Rags. From the creators of Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked, this exhilarating musical follows the journey of Jewish immigrants Rebecca and her son David, who find themselves navigating the teeming, turn-of-the-century tenements of New York. A soaring, tuneful score (music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz) illuminates this sweeping saga (book by Joseph Stein) of dreams and disillusions, love lost and inspiration found, and the heart and soul of the American character. It was declared "A winner, warm and witty. You are tempted to rise cheering," by The Mercury News. Rags will be directed by TheatreWorks Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley, who notes "this production could not be timelier. As America debates immigration policies, what better time to present this deeper look at the newcomer's experience." Performances are April 5-30 (press opening: April 8) at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro Street, Mountain View. For tickets ($35-$86) and more information the public may visit TheatreWorks.orgor call (650) 463-1960. (more...)

Did you know that FAMOUS IN LOVE by Rebecca Serle is now a TV Show on Freeform (Formally know as ABC Family)?  You can watch it every Tuesday at 9 p.m EST. You can binge-watch the entire season online now! I've been a fan of this duology for a long time (and would love for the show to get popular so that the books continue!) and have been waiting to see what this show will be like.  To celebrate, I decided that I wanted to re-read the books, update my old reviews, and talk about my thoughts once I've seen the whole season. I was originally going to do ALL OF THE THINGS this week, then decided to spread it out. So every Tuesday, in honor of each week's new episode, you'll get something new about the show from me! How fun!! ^.~ Today, we're going to start with my original review of FAMOUS IN LOVE, so I can tell you about why I loved the book so much and have been so eager for more from this world! (more...)

BWW Review: Bette Midler's The Star Attraction, But HELLO, DOLLY! is The Star
by Michael Dale - Apr 23, 2017

Yes, yes, we all know… Bette Midler is the above the title attraction and her presence is the reason the latest Broadway revival of HELLO, DOLLY! is the season's hottest new ticket. And she delivers. As Dolly Gallagher Levi, one of the most grandly showcased leading characters ever written for the musical stage, Midler glows with the pure joy that comes with the need to entertain as she lands schticky gags, sings with moxie, conveys lovely sincerity and leads the colorful parade proudly strutting across the Shubert stage. BWW Interview: John Perovich of Now and Then Creative Company
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Apr 12, 2017

Now & Then Creative Company is a culmination of perceived needs in the valley, coupled with opportunities for learning and growth with students at Metropolitan Arts Institute. The 'now' focuses on new play development and film production-working with local artists on the development of plays, screenplays, workshop productions, and film productions. The 'then' produces theatre classics that speak to our present time-plays that tackle large issues to provoke conversation around social concerns. Further, I imagine the classics to be interpreted with a strong vision from directors. We are interested in producing classics with strong concepts-we are not interested in producing classics in ways that feel familiar. More to that point…sometimes classics begin to feel like museum pieces-once you've seen them, you've seen them. We want to nurture an exciting, vibrant, and meaningful approach to the classics. Original CITY OF ANGELS Stars Set for Q&A with Blue Hill Troupe
by BWW News Desk - Apr 11, 2017

The Blue Hill Troupe, now in its 93rd season, brings “City of Angels” back to the stage. Set in the glamorous, seductive Hollywood of the 40s, the world of film studios and flimsy negligees, “City of Angels” chronicles the misadventures of Stine, a young novelist, attempting to write a screenplay of one of his detective novels. Each scene he writes comes to life on stage, starring his hardboiled detective alter-ego, Stone. As Stone's life in the film plot gets more complicated, so does Stine's personal and professional life, until the point when the two plots intersect.  The amazing double score and story do what all good movies should, eventually winding up to two happy endings.
