Thornton Niven Wilder (April 17, 1897 – December 7, 1975) was an American playwright and novelist. He won three Pulitzer Prizes—for the novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey and for the two plays Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth—and a U.S. National Book Award for the novel The Eighth Day.



The show features three one-act plays by Thornton Wilder.

Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) begins accepting entries today, Wednesday, October 3, for its popular LIVEforFIVE online lottery for $5 tickets to the New York premiere of THE WHALE, a new play by Obie Award winner Samuel D. Hunter (A Bright New Boise), directed by Davis McCallum (February House, A Bright New Boise, the upcoming Water By the Spoonful at Second Stage). Due to the overwhelming response to Playwrights Horizons' 2012/2013 season, all productions are now playing longer runs to accommodate the larger subscription base. The limited engagement of THE WHALE, originally announced through Sunday, November 18, will now play through Sunday, December 2. (more...)

The Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School present an evening of opera featuring Act I of Mozart's Die Entfhrung aus dem Serail; Stravinsky's rarely-performed one-act comedy Mavra; Act I, scene 1 of Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini; and Act I, part 2 of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore in the fourth collaboration between the two institutions on Tuesday, February 11 and Friday, February 14, 2014 at 8 PM and Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 2 PM in Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Met Music Director James Levine conducts the Juilliard Orchestra and singers from the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, as well as singers from the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts at Juilliard. Director Edward Berkeley will stage the program in a semi-staged concert version. (more...)

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Streetcar Named Desire follows the story of Blanche DuBois, a weak and disturbed woman on a desperate prowl for some place in the world to call her own. After losing their ancestral home, Belle Reve, Blanche shows up at the doorstep of her sister, Stella, in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Putting on airs of refinement and Southern gentility, Blanche tries to impress her brother-in-law, and his gentle, good-natured friend, Mitch. Seeking to escape from reality, and an emblem of a lost traditional South, Blanche becomes a victim of the harsh present. Marlon Brando starred in the Broadway production and the 4-time Academy Award-winning film adaptation. This will mark the 65th Anniversary of this enduring Tennessee Williams classic. (more...)

New Georges (Susan Bernfield, Artistic Director; Sarah Cameron Sunde, Associate Director), the OBIE Award-winning downtown theater company founded in 1992, and Hip-Hop Theater Festival will present the premiere of OBIE Winning Actress/Pulitzer-nominated playwright Eisa Davis' 'ANGELA'S MIXTAPE,' directed by Liesl Tommy. Ms. Davis who was recently seen on Broadway in last season's award-winning musical Passing Strange will portray herself and Linda Powell, last seen on Broadway in the Tony-nominated revival On Golden Pond, will portray her aunt, professor and activist Angela Davis. 'ANGELA'S MIXTAPE' will be performed at the Ohio Theatre, 66 Wooster Street (between Spring and Broome Streets). Previews begin Monday, April 6, and the official Opening Night will be Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. Performances will run through May 2. (more...)

Hunter and directed by Davis McCallum, begin tonight at 7pm at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, 224 Waverly Place. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Streetcar Named Desire follows the story of Blanche DuBois, a weak and disturbed woman on a desperate prowl for some place in the world to call her own. After losing their ancestral home, Belle Reve, Blanche shows up at the doorstep of her sister, Stella, in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Putting on airs of refinement and Southern gentility, Blanche tries to impress her brother-in-law, and his gentle, good-natured friend, Mitch. Seeking to escape from reality, and an emblem of a lost traditional South, Blanche becomes a victim of the harsh present. Marlon Brando starred in the Broadway production and the 4-time Academy Award-winning film adaptation. This will mark the 65th Anniversary of this enduring Tennessee Williams classic. (more...)
