Beautifully British and bonkers -- this summer, the HandleBards, a four- strong, all-male troupe of cycling players, will pedal the length and breadth of the UK for three months to perform fast-pace productions of Shakespeare's Macbeth and The Comedy Of Errors. This will be the second outing of their World First in environmentally sustainable touring theatre, after they successfully toured productions of Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet last year. Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Greg Reiner, today announced plans for its 2014/2015 Season. The upcoming season for the esteemed off-Broadway company begins in October with Rodgers & Hammerstein's ALLEGRO, directed by Tony Award-winner and CSC Associate Director John Doyle. ALLEGRO marks the second installment of CSC's Musical Theater Initiative, which launched last year with the company's hugely-successful production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Passion, directed by Doyle. Considered one of Richard Rodgers' and Oscar Hammerstein II's most personal and groundbreaking works, ALLEGRO was their third collaboration and first premiered on Broadway in 1947. (more...)

Ripe Time, the Brooklyn-based company led by Rachel Dickstein, has garnered acclaim for creating physically charged, visually powerful adaptations of classic and contemporary stories by authors raging from Edith Wharton to Jhumpa Lahiri. Conceived, written and directed by Dickstein, the play The World is Round epitomizes the company's work, creating from Gertrude Stein's book a fable (for grownups and mature children) full of original, live music by Heather Christian and aerial movement choreographed by Nicki Miller. The Davis Performing Arts Center and the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University, a joint initiative between the Theater and Performance Studies Program and the School of Foreign Service, are pleased to announce that they will present MYRIAD VOICES: A CROSS-CULTURAL PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL. This series of performances from leading artists around the world will be accompanied by convenings, public forums, interdisciplinary courses, and the creation of new work. Georgetown is one of six campuses nationwide to receive a competitive grant from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP), funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. This two-year Festival is part of the Building Bridges Campus Community Engagement Program - Expanding Awareness and Understanding about Muslim Societies through the Performing Arts. (more...)

Anybody expecting a 'museum piece' from the Peter Pasyk-directed production of The Trojan Women at the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival will be disappointed. While based on Euripides' 2,500-year-old classical text, the 1978 adaptation by celebrated poet Gwendolyn MacEwen also examines faith and individual choice through the experiences of the survivors. Dora-nominated director Pasyk and 16 emerging artists will honour the universal--and startlingly contemporary--themes inherent in the work but present it in a world that audiences find familiar: the here and now or, as Pasyk describes it, 'tomorrow'. SITI Company's Board of Directors along with Co-Artistic Directors Anne Bogart, Ellen Lauren and Leon Ingulsrud have named Michelle Preston as its new Executive Director. Preston joined SITI in July of 2012 as Deputy Director, where she oversaw fundraising, external communications, strategic plan implementation, and board development and has served as Interim Executive Director since January of 2014. The Classical Theatre Lab and the City of West Hollywood present A Family Affair by Alexander Ostrovsky, adapted from a translation by Geroge R. Noyes, directed by Mel Green. Causing an uproar when published in 1850, this broad and irreverent Russian comedy of manners centers around a greedy merchant, Bolshov, who makes a fraudulent bankruptcy application in order to finance the lavish lifestyle of his bourgeois husband-hunting daughter. When Bolshov's accomplices run off with his assets and his daughter, he descends into professional and psychological ruin and is jailed. Upon his release, Bolshov, a new man ready to walk the straight and narrow, finds that his selfish and cantankerous family has not changed one bit. (more...)

Sensuous, witty, heartbreaking, and uplifting - The House that will not Stand unearths a story about free women of color in 1836 New Orleans, where black Creole women entered into common-law marriages with affluent white men. When her wealthy lover mysteriously dies, Beartrice Albans' foundation of security hangs precariously by a thread. She is left to fend for her three unwed daughters in a world where freedom must be carefully negotiated. Told in a rich and lyrical river of words, this new play was developed through The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. It's helmed by Patricia McGregor, whose many credits include the celebrated production of Spunk at California Shakespeare Theater. The House that will not Stand begins previews on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage today, January 31, opens on Wednesday, February 5 and runs through Sunday, March 16, 2014. (more...)
