Magic, Comedy, and Vegan Bites on Deck at the NYC Vegetarian Food FestivalMagic, Comedy, and Vegan Bites on Deck at the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival
by BWW News Desk - Apr 20, 2016

Magic and stand-up comedy will be part of the buffet at the sixth annual New York City Vegetarian Food Festival, popping up at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan on May 7-8. Ivan Stratienco, of Insane Illusions, will give Festival attendees a taste of his sleight of hand skills and magic Tricks. The illusionist has more than 10 years experience performing in the tri-state area at both intimate parties and large-scale gatherings. Meanwhile, Myq Kaplan will return for his second Festival appearance. He is a 2010 Last Comic Standing finalist who has also appeared on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, the Late Show with David Letterman, and Comedy Central Presents. His debut CD, Vegan Mind Meld, was one of iTunes' top ten best-selling comedy albums in 2010, followed by Meat Robot in 2013, and his one-hour Netflix special Small Dork and Handsome in 2014. Both of the entertainers happen to be vegan, which will put them right at home at the Festival. Over a hundred vegan vendors will be on hand, as well as plant-based chefs, physicians, professional athletes, and inspiring speakers. The Festival is founded and presented by U.S. Veg Corp. The event-planning company has also branched out to Scottsdale, Arizona with the AZ Vegetarian Food Festival, and it plans to launch the CA Vegetarian Food Festival later this year in the Los Angeles area. U.S. Veg Corp co-founder Sarah Gross said the purpose for staging all of these events is to inject a maximum of fun into living a humane lifestyle. 'We vegans used to have such a serious and militant stereotype,' she said. 'And non-vegans thought we had to be masochistic to deny ourselves all those animal-based foods that are so much a part of the American diet. Our aim is to show that exactly the opposite is true.' New York's Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days. Attendees can expect to snag free food samples from such exhibitors as Rescue Chocolate, Pure Genius Provisions, Beyond Sushi, Pilot Kombucha, and many others. They can also watch cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs including Jenne Claiborne, Isabelle Steichen, Jay Astafa, Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby. Among the high-powered physicians scheduled to speak about their research into the health benefits of a vegan diet are Garth Davis, Thomas Campbell, Robert Ostfeld, and Michael Greger. Festival-goers with young children should also plan to check out the Kumquat Kids Area where there will be story-telling, arts and crafts, and family entertainment. 'Kids should also have fun learning about the importance of sustainable living so those ages 10 and under are always free,' says U.S. Veg Corp co-founder Nira Paliwoda. For more information about the Festival or to purchase tickets, go to http://nycvegfoodfest.com/. (more...)

by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 18, 2016

Delving into the deeply complex culture of Russian life and history - and the fanciful, yet somehow disturbing, tales that have inspired and informed Russian literature for centuries - Miroshnik's equally complex play offers an intriguing and entertaining treatise on that literature, brought to life with contemporary twists and turns that make the stories more accessible to modern theater-goers, while inviting comparisons and contrasts of Russia in the 21st century with the ancient Tsarist era and the hardships of the Communist years of the last century. Thinspa Celeb Spa Director Offers 9 Tips to Lose Belly FatThinspa Celeb Spa Director Offers 9 Tips to Lose Belly Fat
by BWW News Desk - Apr 15, 2016

We all want that flat stomach but sometimes it seems as if no amount of sit-ups will whittle down that waist. Before you beat yourself up, take a step back and examine your daily regimen, advises thinspa celebrity spa director Renata De Abreu. 'Many times the culprit is gas or water retention,' De Abreu says. If you've given yourself a day or two to readjust your body by drinking plenty of water and exercising and you still don't see results, try these tips to help you say goodbye to belly fat. 1. Elimination Is Key: Let's get started with the biggest factor in losing belly fat ? elimination (pooping). Although De Abreu admits it's not the most glamorous thing to talk about, the frequency of elimination is important for weight loss and overall health. It is ideal to go at least once a day, twice is even better. 2. Watch Your Water Intake: Avoid drinking any fluids while eating which can expand the food and cause bloating. In order to digest food correctly, chew thoroughly and drink 30 minutes before or after your meal. Aside from eating, it's still vital to ... 3. Stay Hydrated: While it is important to watch your water intake, it is also vital to stay hydrated throughout the day so that your body can digest your food and flush it out. Bottom line: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. 4. Avoid Chewing Gum: When you chew gum you are also swallowing air, hence more air and bloating in the abdominal area. 5. Study up on Digestion: Do some research on how digestion works. For example, milk is not necessary in an adult's diet after childhood. Check your tolerance for dairy and look to alternate options if needed. 6. Say No to Carbs After 8 p.m.: As your day starts to wind down be sure to keep your meals light with healthy choices such as light soups, salads and proteins. At night, it's especially important to pay attention to how you eat. 7. Abs Aren't Always the Answer: Exercise is important but make sure you are doing moves that flatten your stomach instead of build muscle. Practices such as Pilates and yoga are great ways to tone without becoming bulky. It's also important to incorporate cardio into your workout regime to help burn off any unwanted stomach fat. 8. Give Self-Massages: By incorporating self-massage into your evening regimen you will engage the lymphatic areas that are key to proper digestion. 9. Get Some Shut Eye: Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things you can do. A lack of sleep causes stress and stress causes the body to retain fat. Make sure to sleep at least 6-8 hours a night. When you sleep less than 6 hours a night, your body wakes up hungrier, making you want to eat more throughout your day. To help you wind down at the end of the day, try aromatherapy, acupuncture, warm showers or a cup of almond milk before bed. These little Tricks will help reduce stress and give you a better night's sleep. Troubleshooting: If none of these tips seem to work, then ask your physician to measure your cortisone levels. When the cortisone hormone level is high it can cause salt retention resulting in body bloat. Maintenance: Once you've got the belly fat under control, make an appointment at a local thinspa for an extra push in the right direction. Non-invasive aesthetic treatments like laser liposuction and radio frequency can help to contour the body, tighten the skin and break down fatty cells. Be sure to stay active. Many people stop their regular maintenance routine once they start seeing results. Don't underestimate your body's cell memory. The body's cells have a memory of the amount of fat retention they are allowed to have. This memory takes about 6 months to erase. Make sure your body cell memory gets used to your 'new' fat intake before you fall back into your 'older' and bigger fatty retention cells. For more on living a thinspa life, email Christina Sears, Director of Marketing, at christina.s@joinelements.com. (more...)
