by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 7, 2015

Today we are continuing our expansive ongoing discussion with Tony Award-winning scenic design visionary Beowulf Boritt. Continuing the exhaustive discussion of this week's spectacular one night only concert event PARADE, Boritt outlines the visual high-points of the evening as well as offers an explanation of the impetus for many of the ideas behind the inventive design for the unique event. Additionally, Boritt opens up about his other work at Lincoln Center over the years, including Manhattan Concert Productions presentation of RAGTIME and his Tony Award-winning work on the Moss Hart drama ACT ONE, which will be shown on PBS as part of LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER later this year. Furthermore, Boritt shines a light on his multiple other current musicals running or opening soon - the revival of ON THE TOWN on Broadway, plus HAND TO GOD opening soon and Off-Broadway's CLINTON: THE MUSICAL. Plus, Boritt details his work on a dizzying array of current tours and recent mainstage mountings of musicals ranging from the national tours of ANNIE and JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT to his work on LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, LITTLE DANCER, THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS in the West End and far beyond. As if all that were not enough, Boritt also looks ahead to the 2016 Tokyo production of the Harold Prince revue PRINCE OF BROADWAY and comments on rumors of an impending New York return of THE TOXIC AVENGER while sharing first news on his involvement with a number of new productions including the Keira Knightley-led revival of THERESE RAQUIN and the forthcoming revival of A BRONX TALE. All of that and much, much more in this concluding portion of our extended chat with one of Broadway's best visual artists. (more...)

In late March (I'm bringing you up to the minute news), TUTS Underground staged the first ever reading of SWEET POTATO QUEENS. The piece put me in the mind of stories and movies like the DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD or SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS. Basically, anything with sister in it. That's no insult. Sandra Bullock in YA-YA is as good as Sandra in GRAVITY. I dare you to say otherwise. (more...)

BWW Reviews: PETER PAN Takes Flight in a Magical New Production at Children's Theatre CompanyBWW Reviews: PETER PAN Takes Flight in a Magical New Production at Children's Theatre Company
by Jill Schafer - Apr 27, 2015

?Being a grown-up is hard. You have to be concerned about things like bills, a job, a house, traffic, the deterioration of the environment, and violence and injustice in our backyards and around the world. It's really a drag - no wonder Peter Pan doesn't want to be one! And while we boring and worried grown-ups don't have the option of returning to a blissful childhood, we can go to the Children's Theatre Company and forget about all of our grown-up worries, remembering and reveling in the joy and freedom of youth. What better choice for CTC, then, than the musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie's iconic tale about the boy who won't grow up? Kids love it because they see themselves in Peter, and we grown-ups see an even deeper meaning in the story as we watch the children around us grow up in an increasingly dangerous world, and long for our own days of innocence. It's a perfect choice perfectly executed by the entire cast and creative and technical teams. This PETER PAN is something quite magical, and quite simply the best thing I've seen at CTC. (more...)

BWW Review: World Premiere BAD DOG Feels Old, Lacks New Tricks at Orlando ShakespeareBWW Review: World Premiere BAD DOG Feels Old, Lacks New Tricks at Orlando Shakespeare
by Matt Tamanini - Apr 16, 2015

There is a tradition in the American theatre popularized by some of our country's greatest playwrights; Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee and others. Though generally a product of the mid-20th Century, the trend was reignited in 2007 by Tracy Letts' riveting Tony and Pulitzer-winning play AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. Since, innumerable new works have put a different spin on the dysfunctional family torn asunder by the ramifications of alcohol and drug addiction; and frankly, it's time for that trend to stop. BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Bluray, DVD Offer Behind the Scenes MagicBWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Bluray, DVD Offer Behind the Scenes Magic
by Matt Tamanini - Apr 1, 2015

Though the magic of the woods is not as spectacular on a TV as it was on the big screen, the vast majority of INTO THE WOODS' enchantment admirably makes the transition to the small screen. Last Christmas, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved Broadway fairy tale took the big screen by storm with a star-studded movie adaptation, and last week Disney released DVD and Blu-Ray versions full of bonus features. Despite all of the extras on the disks, INTO THE WOODS' main draw is still its incredible stars. With a cast of Hollywood A-listers and Broadway alums, all of whom prove more than capable of handling Stephen Sondheim's uniquely intricate and intellectual music and lyrics, this very well might be the most effectively adapted movie musical of the past half century. The lush orchestrations, the gorgeous settings, and the spectacular cast are just as bewitching as they were in the movie theatre. (more...)
