BWW Interview: MSMT Panel Examines the Enduring Appeal of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Jul 28, 2016

One week into the virtually sold-out run of MSMT's Fiddler on the Roof, cast members, Bill Nolte, Susan Cella, Erick Devine, and Rachel Rhodes-Devey, together with MSMT's Managing Director Stephanie Dupal convened in the third Peek Behind the Curtain panel discussion at the Curtis Memorial Library on July 27, 2016, to examine the phenomenon of the show that continues to mesmerize audiences fifty-two years after its Broadway debut. In response to moderator Carla Maria Verdino-Sullwold's observation that Fiddler is a show which - like its characters - survives, the participants discussed their individual perspectives on the show, their characters, and the universal themes that continue to speak powerfully to audiences. BWW Review: World Premiere ALL MY DISTANCES ARE FAR Shares Teen Sessions with School Therapist
by Shari Barrett - Aug 3, 2016

As a former high school teacher who started an alternative program for students who had dropped out, I participated in counselling troubled teens in learning how to deal with challenging circumstances in their lives, be it with parents, siblings, friends, or the desire to find love and respect from that special someone. It's especially difficult when a teen is also dealing with emotional or physical disorders or abuse. And what happens to a foster teen when she ages out of the system? What happens to an adolescent boy with Asperger's when he falls in love? What happens to a Straight-A student who is being sexually molested? In Leda Siskind's world premiere play ALL MY DISTANCES ARE FAR we meet all these characters and others as they confide to the psychotherapist who sees them at their urban high school. (more...)

In reality, she's swapped the Big Apple for the Windy City to star in Tony Award-winner Mary Zimmerman's production of Wonderful Town, premiering at the Goodman this September. Though portraying an aspiring actress, Molina has already belted Sondheim on the Broadway stage and tours as one-half of a popular musical duo. Between rehearsals, she took some time for an exclusive BroadwayWorld Q&A: (more...)

LaMaMa to Host Algerian Company Istijmam's THE APPLES
by BWW News Desk - Aug 25, 2016

A displaced factory worker, an old trade unionist, and an actor serendipitously meet in a public toilet, brought together by a vain pursuit of a precious piece of fruit and the need for a clean, calm space to rehearse Julius Caesar. Embodied by Algerian-based experimental theater company Istijmam, these three characters form the core of Et'teffeh (The Apples), a physically charged, satiric fable that captures the frustrations, absurdities, and uncertainties of everyday life. BWW Review: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Mixes Shakespeare's Classic Romantic Comedy with a Rockin' Song Score
by Shari Barrett - Aug 17, 2016

Director Gloria Gifford takes her job of inspiring upcoming stars in proper stage presentation, and above all, I must commend her for making sure each actor in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at TU Studios understood exactly what they were saying so audience members could not only understand the words but also what was being said in terms of the dialogue's meaning. It is the first production of the play in which I could get the meaning of each line, even though the words as written were foreign to modern English. Some of the actors shared with me that Gloria demanded their line presentation and stage movements make perfect sense, and the actors responded with great care. (more...)

The path from screen to stage hasn't always been a smooth one, and celluloid success is no guarantee of musical triumph (just ask the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark team). But London is currently awash with popular medium-jumpers, from Aladdin and The Bodyguard to new musical Groundhog Day, which opened last night at the Old Vic. Here are 10 of the best screen to stage adaptations. (more...)

BWW Review: RTC's Revived CABARET Tour Returns to OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Aug 16, 2016

CABARET's Tony Award-winning 1998 Broadway revival co-directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, still stands, arguably, as the show's definitive stage iteration. That same vibrant Roundabout Theatre Company production rightly serves as the basis for the newer 2014 revival that is now in the midst of a brand new North American national tour---currently performing at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through August 21. Whether you're a fan of that amazing '98 revival or, better still, the iconic 1972 film adaptation, this brazenly confident new CABARET---a rousing combo-platter of the best elements of the show through its entire history---will surely entertain and, yes, even move you. BWW Blog: Arielle Jacobs - Flying High, Down Under: Part 4: The Audience Effect
by Guest Blogger: Arielle Jacobs - Aug 16, 2016

Tonight was our first audience at the Capitol Theater!  It was exciting to finally share our creation with the 1600 friends and family that attended our final dress rehearsal.  Before it started, the whole cast was buzzed, nervous, excited.  After the curtain came down at the end, I sang to our genie, Michael James Scott, "We can never go back to befoooooore!" a la Ahrens & Flaherty. Tonight we crossed over a threshold, giving away what was once our private creative space. It's like spending 6 weeks making a fantastic cake, and then watching everyone enjoy it and eat it up.  But the process of making it ready, making it perfect… the anticipation phase… it's done. BWW Review: SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD at Gloucester Stage
by Nancy Grossman - Aug 12, 2016

There's good news and bad news in the Gloucester Stage production of Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. The inspiring song cycle from 1995 shows the composer's promise that has been fulfilled, as evidenced by his three Tony Awards, and there is much to enjoy in both the music and lyrics (when you can hear them). The five-member cast features quality vocalists, but they often lose focus while they are busily moving around the stage in Director Robert Walsh's zeal to substitute action for the nonexistent connective libretto. BWW Review: CARNIVAL is a Dazzling Magical Delight
by Frank Benge - Aug 12, 2016

CARNIVAL is a musical that originally appeared on Broadway in 1961, with a book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Bob Merrill. You may better know Merrill as the writer of the lyrics for Funny Girl. It is based on the 1953 MGM film Lili. The show is seldom produced; outside of the original production's National Tour; only a handful of productions have been done professionally, and one of those was a staged concert version. The main reason is the difficulty of the music. I am pleased to report that not only does the Summer Stock Austin production handle the score beautifully, the entire production is a dazzling, magical delight. (more...)
