BWW Recap: Can Anyone 'Ransom a Man's Soul' on Tonight's OUTLANDER Finale?BWW Recap: Can Anyone 'Ransom a Man's Soul' on Tonight's OUTLANDER Finale?
by Kara McCoy - May 30, 2015

I'm going to cut to the chase here: tonight's season finale of OUTLANDER was hard to watch. I mean, really hard to watch. It made 'Wentworth Prison' look like an episode of 'Full House.' I'm pretty sure my skin was crawling for the entire 60 minutes, starting with that first shot of Jamie staring dead into the camera. Jamie, whose dashing heroics and boyish humor charmed us all season long, now broken, with empty eyes and mangled hands. And as the camera slowly pans up to reveal a naked Jack Randall lying beside him, we come to understand. We didn't need to see exactly what had preceded this moment because the look on Jamie's face says it all. And maybe we even gave a tiny sigh of relief that we didn't see what happened. But that doesn't last long. Not to compare Jamie's experience to our own watching the episode, but it seemed like the audience was meant to undergo some psychological torment, too, with enough subsequent images to send us directly into the shower to wash off that Black Jack grime as soon as it was over. Once again Rivertown has done it, folks.  I mean seriously… I don't think it's actually possible for these guys to put on a bad show.  This time, they took us to the French Riviera to hang out with the likes of Lawrence Jameson (played by Robert Pavlovich), Freddy Benson (played by Gary Rucker), and Christine Colgate (played by Kayla Herrington)… each of them con artists in their own right.  (more...)

by Natalie de la Garza - May 27, 2015

POLTERGEIST is a solid, well-acted film with creepy clowns, evil entities, and a few sincere scares. It's not a complete waste of your time or money, but like many remakes you'll question why it's necessary. Consider waiting for it on Netflix or, if you insist on seeing it on the big screen, choose the matinee and avoid paying extra for 3D. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MURDER FOR TWO a Devious Delight at the GeffenBWW Reviews: MURDER FOR TWO a Devious Delight at the Geffen
by Don Grigware - Jun 5, 2015

No surprise that the little musical comedy with a big bang, Murder for Two by Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair took off-Broadway by storm in 2013! Described as 'a musical comedy with a dash of Agatha Christie', it actually defies classification. Yes, it has music and a murder mystery plot and is screamingly funny, but it's a whole lot more. Only two performers provide as much or more entertainment than a big over-produced, full cast Broadway show. It covers a lot of ground in 100 minutes and with Jeff Blumenkrantz playing a bevy of suspects, both male and female, Brett Ryback essaying officer Marcus Moskowitz, who is determined to be promoted to detective by the end of the play - both of whom play the piano with a feverish passion - and guided by director Scott Schwartz's super-fast pace and frenetic staging, it's like a colossal roller coaster ride that while barreling along could at any second lose control, but never does. Now onstage at the Geffen Playhouse, audiences will be thrilled and bedazzled through August 2. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Clever, Imaginative PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Flies Into South Coast RepBWW Reviews: Clever, Imaginative PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Flies Into South Coast Rep
by Michael L. Quintos - Jun 2, 2015

Let's first get this very necessary accolade out of the way: South Coast Repertory's brand new production of Rick Elice's PETER AND THE STARCATCHER is, hands down, one of the most enjoyable, most thrilling, and most engagingly imaginative plays I have seen all season---a fitting capper to the Tony Award-winning Orange County theater's 51st year. This delightfully revised production---which continues performances in Costa Mesa through June 7---re-calibrates the play's hyperactive mixture of mirth and mayhem by further emphasizing its seemingly 'bare-bones' storytelling devices, resulting in one entertaining night of theater that both kids and adults will find endearingly beguiling. Motivated by imagination, I seriously cannot recall the last time I laughed this boisterously and had this much unabashed joy from sitting through a play in quite some time. (more...)
