BWW Reviews: Transatlantic Love Affair Brings Their Trademark Inventive Physical Theater Style to the Exquisitely Lovely THESE OLD SHOESBWW Reviews: Transatlantic Love Affair Brings Their Trademark Inventive Physical Theater Style to the Exquisitely Lovely THESE OLD SHOES
by Jill Schafer - Jan 30, 2015

I'll never forget the first time I saw Transatlantic Love Affair. It was the 'Audience Pick' show at the end of a long and exhausting 2012 Fringe Festival. I was tired and crabby and fringed out, but from the moment the lights went down on ASH LAND, TLA transported me to another world, a world so specifically and beautifully created on a bare stage by a group of performers using nothing but their bodies, voices, and souls to communicate the story. I've seen them a number of times since then, both at the Fringe and as part of Illusion Theater's 'Lights Up' series, and they continue to move me beyond what just 'ordinary' theater is able to do. TLA returned to Illusion Theater last night with a remount of their 2013 Fringe hit THESE OLD SHOES, a touching story of time, memory, regret, second chances, and long lost love rediscovered. In everything they do, TLA is nothing less than exquisite. But disappointingly, the theater last night was not as full as it should have been. My goal in writing this piece is to get as many people as possible to go see THESE OLD SHOES. You cannot call yourself a true Twin Cities theater fan if you've never seen Transatlantic Love Affair, and there's no better place to start than with this achingly lovely show. (more...)

What have you guys merged with lately? Your twin? Your brother who is technically 18 years older than you but because of witchy circumstances is actually the same age as you physically? Me personally, I merged with a box of ranch flavored Wheat Thins. It was a stressful job, but not as stressful as the Parker family's life on tonight's episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, entitled 'Prayer for the Dying,' which included a real death, a vampire death, and an almost death. IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ What does the physical heart have to do with the romantic 'heart' of love lore? Plenty, according to the Center for Disease Control. Its website states that you should 'stay 'heart healthy' for yourself and your loved ones.' It's no coincidence that the American Heart Association chose February as its National Heart Month. Whether you're starting a new romance or celebrating a long-lived love affair, it makes sense to stay as heart healthy as possible. (more...)

BWW Reviews: With Mattei as the Lead and Gilbert at the Helm, GIOVANNI Settles the Score at the MetBWW Reviews: With Mattei as the Lead and Gilbert at the Helm, GIOVANNI Settles the Score at the Met
by Richard Sasanow - Feb 9, 2015

I consider Mozart's DON GIOVANNI at the top of my list of favorite operas--the music starts to go through my head without much encouragement and gets stuck there. Yet, it's also one of the most problematic in performance, calling for a large group of A-list singers to do justice to the ripe and sometimes rollicking score--and frequently falling short. Luckily for current audiences at the Met, the cast is headed by Swedish baritone Peter Mattei, who already triumphed in Mozart at the Met this season in the new NOZZE DI FIGARO and there are enough other first-rate principals to make it work. The second you take your seat to experience Kneehigh's dazzlingly unorthodox adaptation of the classic doomed romance TRISTAN AND YSEULT at South Coast Repertory, you know for sure you're in for---well, as the folks in Monty Python would say---something completely different. From the get-go, there's an enticing fascination that swirls wildly around this quirky, expressively theatrical Brit import, which is the latest U.S.-touring production from Kneehigh, the much-lauded Cornwall, England-based stage troupe. by Dylan Siegman - Feb 19, 2015

You know how the story goes: Boy gets married, other boy gets married, both marriages fall apart, both boys move in together, one boy is sloppy while the other boy is neat, hilarious hijinks ensue. Chances are that you've seen/heard about one of the incarnations of THE ODD COUPLE, whether it was the movie starring Walter Matthau (CHARADE, GRUMPY OLD MEN) and Jack Lemmon (SOME LIKE IT HOT, GRUMPY OLD MEN), the tv series back in the 70's starring Jack Klugman (QUINCY M.E., 12 ANGRY MEN) and Tony Randall (PILLOW TALK, DOWN WITH LOVE), or the original play by Neil Simon on which all the subsequent versions were all based. Regardless, Felix Unger and Oscar Madison are back, this time played by Thomas Lennon (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, MEMENTO) and Matthew Perry (FRIENDS, 17 AGAIN). I find both of these actors extremely funny, so it will be interesting to see how this all pans out. Considering Perry's recent string of cancellations, he could really use a winner. (more...)

'King Hedley II,' in Timothy Douglas' riveting and thrilling production now at Arena Stage, portrays life in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1980's. The six-character play is a symphony of rage, despair, hope, regret, love and determination. Douglas has staged Wilson's play in the round with a spare, concrete-inflected set. The production has a deliberate, ritualistic tone, with the actors assembling in silence and remaining visible throughout the performance. (more...)

Because Will's vaudeville Trick rope act led him to headline the Ziegfeld Follies, THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES tells his life story as if it were being told through one of Mr. Ziegfeld's productions.
