by Amelia Reynolds - Nov 8, 2016

Quarter-life crisis is the new midlife crisis, and the characters in The Annex Theatre's "The Lost Girls" are suffering. BWW Review: THE CHILDREN, Royal Court, 24 November 2016
by Alexandra Coghlan - Nov 25, 2016

Three sixty-something retired scientists talk to one another in a remote seaside cottage for two hours. It doesn't sound like theatrical gold, but in Lucy Kirkwood's deft hands, an unassuming premise becomes transformed by a quiet dramatic alchemy. The Children isn't a play that shouts, but it's one whose whispers carry far and linger even longer - a warm, funny and devastating portrait of the end of the world as we know it. (more...)

BWW Review: MACBETH Conquers at Mahalia Jackson Theatre
by Tara Bennett - Nov 16, 2016

There are fewer well-known tales of murderous ambition outside of William Shakespeare's "MACBETH." BWW Recap: SUPERGIRL's Friends are All 'Changing' on this Week's Episode
by Nicole Ackman - Nov 15, 2016

Everyone surrounding Kara -- James, Winn, Alex, Mon-El, and J'onn-- went through a major life change on this week's episode of SUPERGIRL. James and Winn debuted their combined creation of The Guardian, Mon-El dealt with whether he wants to be a hero or not, and J'onn received a threatening blood transfusion. Most poignantly, Alex came out to Kara in a stunning portrayal by Chyler Leigh. Meanwhile, the DEO team battled an alien parasite that proved to be a dangerous match even for Supergirl and the Martian Manhunter. The acting in this episode, especially from Chyler and Jeremy Jordan, was truly some of the best we've seen this season. (more...)

BWW Review: ONCE Was Enough at PPAC
by Andria Tieman - Dec 5, 2016

ONCE, the award-winning stage musical based on the award-winning film of the same name, is an obvious addition to Broadway.  Featuring songs written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who also starred in the film, this production seems like it can't miss.  Unfortunately, despite excellent music and vocal and musical performances from an obviously talented cast, this production's book, by Irish playwright Enda Walsh,  seems to assume that the only people who would be interested in this show are those who have seen the movie.  Therefore, there is next-to-no character development, and random scenes inserted that make no sense to anyone not intimately familiar with the source material.  Since this is a show about music and musicians, one would think that story goes out the window then in favor of reworking this as almost a musical revue, rather than a traditional narrative.  That would have worked, since the story is a sweetly simple one and doesn't require much, but the choice was made instead to shoehorn in extra scenes of dialogue, most of which take far longer and meader far more than necessary to advance the plot, and wind up creating something that is just dull and lazy. BWW Interview: Amy G Gets Us On The List for CLUB SWIZZLE at Sydney Opera House
by Brodie Paparella - Dec 5, 2016

We live in uncertain times; today's version of talent is an impressive Instagram following, YouTube killed the show reel, and much of the art forms once adored are phasing out. What does the emerging theatregoing audience know of vaudeville? Or burleycue? Thankfully, we have those answers in amazing stalwarts reinventing and reenergising these classic forms and making them timeless all over again. As a sincerely scintillating ensemble are bubbling away to create the latest in a line of variety-circus-burlesque triumphs, Broadway World got to sit down with Amy G and talk turkey. BWW Blog: Sebastian Trevino - Swing Life
by Guest Blogger: Sebastian Trevino - Dec 5, 2016

Mexican musical theatre, unlike the US', hasn't been around all that long. It's not just another theatre genre for you guys; it has actually helped shape and influence your pop culture! I mean, you guys blasted Age of Aquarius on your 1969 Ford Mustang radios when it was peaking five consecutive weeks on the US billboard charts even if you weren't a musical junkie. Fred Astaire was one of your biggest movie stars and heartthrobs. A leading man tap dancer on all the biggest tabloid magazines? That would've been unthinkable in machista Mexico. Fortunately though, American pop culture is so powerful, that it permeates the rest of the World's. So yeah, we've had a glimpse of all that musical theatre flare in our lives in someway or another, but since it's still a pretty undeveloped industry (compared to yours) in the southern neighboring country, it's not surprising my mom's reaction to me getting the male swing part in Rent Mx 2016 went something like this: 'Oh my god Sebastian, that's amazing! I'm so proud.' (Long pause) 'Swing. That's an interesting name for a character'… FML.  (more...)
