Top Banana is a musical with music and lyrics by Johnny Mercer and book by Hy Kraft which premiered on Broadway in 1951. The show was written as a star vehicle for comedian Phil Silvers, who played the host of a television variety show program. Silvers won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in 1952.

Disney Theatrical Productions Donates Objects From THE LION KING To The Smithsonian

In a special ceremony today, Disney Theatrical Productions donated objects from the Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical 'The Lion King' to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Costume elements from the show's protagonist Simba and the tribal shaman Rafiki will join objects from the musicals 'Cats,' 'Rent' and the 'King and I' in the museum's permanent entertainment collections. WICKED's Elphaba Costume Inducted into the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History

In a historic ceremony on Monday, December 17th, the blockbuster musical WICKED's iconic Elphaba costume, hat and broom were inducted into the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Tony Award-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty was on hand to sign the deed of gift as well as Broadway cast members Donna Vivino and Tiffany Haas who sang a selection of song from WICKED to commemorate this significant event. Review - The Nance

I suppose the problem with being the greatest Broadway comic actor of your generation is that once the label sticks you rarely get the opportunity to prove that you can also turn in great dramatic performances.  (Conversely, not since Garbo laughed has anyone been surprised to see a great dramatic actor excel in a comic part.)  In Douglas Carter Beane's ambitious, provocative and lovely protest drama/romantic comedy, The Nance, Nathan Lane finally gets to originate the kind of role that highlights what makes him a genuine stage star.  He sings, he says funny lines, he plays love scenes… but most of all he perceptively plays a strikingly original character in what will most likely be considered, up to this point, the best stage performance of his career.
