BWW Review: Tony Winning Star KRISTIN CHENOWETH Returns to OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Mar 15, 2016

Orange County was once again gifted a compact, intermission-free version of Broadway superstar Kristin Chenoweth's 'Coming Home' concert on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts (she performed a version of this concert last year at the Walt Disney Concert Hall). As expected, the spunky and sassy Tony Award Winner---joined on stage by musical director/accompanist Mary-Mitchell Campbell and an excellent four-piece jazz ensemble---wowed the adoring crowd throughout the show with her Southern-fried tales of growing up as a Christian daddy's girl in Oklahoma, who would later rise to meteoric marquee heights on the Broadway stage thanks to her incredible set of vocal pipes and unmissable acting chops. Along the way, she sings a wonderful mix of hilarious ditties, familiar showtunes, and some emotionally-stirring ballads that prove why she's a stunningly good performer. (more...)

BWW Recap: THRONES Brings Death and Destruction in 'The Battle of the Bastards'
by Jessica Naftaly - Jun 20, 2016

We're just one episode away from the final episode of Season 6 of Game of Thrones and the penultimate episode entitled “The Battle of the Bastards” premiered last night. Despite what the promos had us believe, we got not one, but two battles this episode, and it was certainly an episode jam packed with death, gore, and violence. All three things we're quite used to on Thrones! Episode 9 of this show has become known amongst its viewers and creators as the big one. It's usually the episode where everything comes to fruition, the climax of the series that has everyone cheering and applauding the show immediately after for its genius and shock. Last year we had “Hardhome,” which was a direct departure from the books and gave us death and destruction, only to have the Night King lift his arms and raised the dead. However, this episode, despite being totally epic in scale and stunning visually, lacked a certain complexity, integrity, and dimensionality that made episodes like “Blackwater” back in Season 2 so rich and exciting. “The Battle of the Bastards” was entertaining and a feat of direction, cinematography, and scale, for sure, but its predictability, cluttered circumstance, and ever so confusing character choices and motivations made the episode suffer as a whole.  (more...)

BWW Review: LOVE LETTERS Is GCT's Valentine to the Community
by Joseph Baker - Feb 8, 2016

In his Sonnet 116, William Shakespeare wrote, 'Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments' -- and impediments there are aplenty in A.R. Gurney's oft-performed LOVE LETTERS, which Director Anthony Isbell and a sterling, rotating cast of three couples has staged at the intimate Germantown Community Theatre. It's a St. Valentine's gift to the community, to be sure; and as soon as you enter the atmospheric lobby, pay heed to the scattering of deep-red rose petals and the framed quotations of letters from famous lovers -- everyone from John Keats to (even) Oscar Wilde to Johnny Cash. You'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't, as they establish a real mood for what takes place on stage. (more...)

BWW Review: ROMEO AND JULIET at Synetic Theater
by Pamela Roberts - Feb 22, 2016

Shakespeare's iambic pentameter, the rhythm of his words, echo the human heartbeat: ba-BUM, ba-BUM. But Synetic Theater gets to the beating heart of ROMEO AND JULIET without a single utterance of any of the Bard's famed words. In its innovative merging of drama and movement, Synetic's silent exploration of the classic work is an extraordinary vision of wonder and passion. (more...)

BWW Review: SuperMAS Leaps Tall Buildings
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 20, 2016

Oh, for the love of God, we get it, we get it: The superwomen – who might best be described as the superheroines of Nashville's theaterati and assorted non-stagey types – of SuperMAS love each other, admire each other's mad musical theater skills and get along as well as a bunch of Canadians trying to out-courteous one another! But just imagine how much fun it would be if the quintet of superior performers could somehow show us the seamy underbelly of their interactions and artistic collaborations, exposing us to the histrionics of the Real Housewives reality of their relationships…complete with overturned tables, repeated air kisses and trips to faraway lands where they redefine the term “ugly Americans.” (more...)
