Famed gossip columnist Liz Smith -- "the Grande Dame of Dish" -- has won countless honors, including an Emmy Award, in her long career. But she's never before been depicted on the stage. In "Theater Boys" -- the new musical comedy by ASCAP Award-winner Chip Deffaa, now playing at the 13th Street Repertory Theater -- she's not only a character in the show, she's the subject of a whole song about her, a rousing fast-boogie simply titled "Liz Smith." Due to popular demand, La Jolla Playhouse announces a week-long extension for its U.S. premiere production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, featuring a score by the multiple Academy, Grammy and Tony Award-winning team of composer Alan Menken (Newsies, Little Shop of Horrors) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), book by Peter Parnell (The West Wing, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever) and direction by Scott Schwartz (Playhouse's Jane Eyre, Broadway's Golda's Balcony). The production marks the show's Canadian regional premier, led by a cast of rising Vancouver talents. The musical features music by Michael Gore, and lyrics byDean Pitchford, who collaborated on the score for FAME. Lawrence D. Katie Brayben to Star in West End's BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL, February

Katie Brayben will play the title role in the West End production of Beautiful - The Carole King Musicalopening at the Aldwych Theatre in February next year. Alan Morrissey will play King's husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, with Lorna Want as song-writer Cynthia Weil, Glynis Barber as Genie Klein, King's mother, and Gary Trainor as music publisher and producer Don Kirshner. London previews beginning on 10 February 2015 and with the show currently booking to 13 June 2015. Press night will now take place on 24 February at 7pm. Final casting will be announced shortly. Steppenwolf Theatre Company launches its 2014/15 Subscription Season with the Chicago premiere production of The Night Alive by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson. Henry Wishcamper directs a cast featuring ensemble members Francis Guinan and Tim Hopper with Helen Sadler, Dan Waller and M. Emmet Walsh. The world premiere of The Night Alive was produced at London's Donmar Warehouse in 2013. The Night Alive began previews September 18, 2014 (opening night is September 28; press performances are September 27 at 3pm and September 30 at 7:30pm) and runs through November 16, 2014 in Steppenwolf's Downstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St). The New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham, part of the Ambassador Theatre Group, certainly know how to organise a press launch! The UK touring cast of Jersey Boys gave the multitude of journalists, group bookers and specially invited guests a musical feast at the wonderful Jam House venue in the idyllic St Paul's Square in the Jewellery Quarter. The funky launch location was buzzing and impeccably organised by the theatre's Press Officer and her team. The event has become a staple for Tony Hawk Foundation supporters and celebrities alike, offering a fun kid-centric day that culminates with Hawk and friends performing on his personal ramp. WICKED Sets Lottery Policy for Smith Center Run

A day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of orchestra seats will be held for WICKED, which is returning to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts with performances from Wednesday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 9. Two and one-half hours prior to each performance, people who present themselves at The Smith Center box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum; thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person. Lottery participants must have a valid photo ID when submitting their entry form and, if chosen, when purchasing tickets. (more...)
